MSFS 2024 vs MSFS 2020 Graphics Comparison!

Today we compare Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 to its predecessor, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. Are the graphics really that much of an improvement in 2024? To find out we’ve travelled to various parts of the world in MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 to do some direct comparisons, allowing us to see how the two sims differ from each other. To get a good sense of things, we visit Madeira, Innsbruck, the Grand Canyon, JFK and Edinburgh.

Let us know in the comments your thoughts. Which do you think looks better?

Just give 2024 a year or 2 to mature, and nobody will be debating which looks better. It's good to remember that 2020 in week 1 (or even year 1) was nothing like the 2020 we know and love today.

Thanks for the vid. I took the plunge and downloaded 2024 last night. Since then I've had a few hours with the Fenix and had no issues at all. The biggest pain is setting up the hardware but once you get your head around it it's quite intuitive.

When flying cruise level (like FL340) MSFS2020 looks way better in my opinion. For some reason the ground texture resolution in 2024 seems to be very blurry. The LOD seems to be decreased as well in 2024. There is a big thread in the MSFS2024 Forum online. A lot of people have these issues right now…

After a week of flying in both sims to compare the two, I've decided to embrace 2024. I've visited all the places featured on your video in real life, and on the sim, and you are are right about there being too many trees. Hopefully they will sort this out.

After the initial shaky start for me also, I am absolutely loving 2024. Getting the Fenix in and familiarising myself with the control configuration, I find it hard to return to 2020.

Great video comparison, I’m slowly warming towards MSFS 2024 👍

0:38 the ground looks so fake and cheap imo espically the ground in the distance next to the runway

Ive been having issues with 2020 since download of 2024. It keeps freezing up for no apparent reason. No issue at all previously.

I have read many early comments that said it was an incemental improvement, but to me, the differeince is amazing. I flew the adventure flight though Yosimiti and it was beauriful. I flew sandwitched between a low lever overcast with coulds above me, is it was magicial. The night time lighthing is fantistically better. Lots of nauance, like flying over the Hearst mansion and seeing a highly detialed model. Iceland looks fantastic. As many bugs as it has, I can't to back to 2020.

Fs2024 has waaayyy to many trees, Cambridge (uk) for example, taking off out of Marshall's airport looks like the city has been built in a forest. Which makes me think actually alot of the images you showed also had too many trees and fs2020 may actually be more correct, I've gone back to fs2020 for now, it's just too broken at the moment, and as a VR user it's a fps slideshow compared to fs2020

I do wonder if trees 🌲 which are great are masking photogrammetry 😂

Thanks for this video - really nice to see comparison of same areas between the two sims 👍

I still have to many reliability issues with 24 & soon with 2 weeks up & only 1 update. I think I may have to wait to until later into next year to revisit.

2024 lighting, ground detail & clouds are awesome I just wish the UI, servers & pack aircraft had the same care & attention.

❤flying for lower in new sim is a treat for sure ❤

Well, with 2020 version I have around 70 mods. It makes very realistic for normal flights ( airport to airport). No need for the terrible streaming issues for the airport to show up in ultra settings. I. only use FAA in the settings to get perfect sharpness of the flight instruments. And I have "modified" the Nvidia driver to my liking: the fps went up 3x and still looks great. 30fps to 90fps! Yes, 2024 version is nice to "walk around" with and look at the nature! Amazing fast to get started with 2024 version, perhaps around 15 min to buy, download and install and go for a "walk". I got the steam version.

Honestly 2024 isn't much of a visual upgrade from 2020 from what I can see. Using both sims at ultra settings, I found that in some parts 2024 looks better and in some places 2020 looks better. The only real improvement in visuals is at night to be honest. 2024's night environment is definitely an upgrade compared to 2020. Even though 2024 has seasons, I've found Rex AccuSeason doing a better job at portraying seasons than 2024...Ouch. All my opinions though and I know a lot of others will disagree. To each their own.

For me, it’s a plane simulator first and most of the planes and avionics are broken in some way. Not happy. I can’t believe much testing was done here as the issues are too obvious.

Can you maybe make a video on how to optimize VRAM usage in msfs?

There's no doubt certain areas look a lot better (from what I've seen in videos), but some of the countryside visuals seem a bit to bright green and the brown shades seem a bit weird. There were similar issues in 2020 where colours were off, so I tweaked my GPU settings to my liking, and I'm sure the same could be done with 2024. Still to me the number one concern is my Internet speed, and I'm not going to jump until I'm happy that will be sufficient, either through optimisations or being able to locally store various sim features and/or aircraft.

A big problem for the areas I like to fly in 2020 is the wonky white balance of the terrain texture. Some places vegetation looks blue gree and other places warm greem. Stone mountains look warm grey and not neutral anywhere. It's still there in 2024 from what I can see here. Overall much better though.

Way too many trees in 2024, esp. Madeira
