Catastrophic Ice Sheet Meltdown

The sudden, catastrophic melting of ancient ice sheets released millions of cubic kilometers of water into Earth’s ocean basins. Data suggests this rapid event occurred between 13,000 and 14,000 years ago, creating a chaotic period of environmental upheaval. This 1,000-year window, marked by dramatic climate shifts, profoundly shaped Earth's landscapes and the lives of those who experienced it. These findings offer critical insights into the dynamics of Earth's past and the impacts of sudden climate events.

A glacier "calves" when it advances because of MORE ice accumulating on the ice cap which pushes the coastal ice over deeper water where it can break off. A melting glacier does just that, it melts.
