One of the key updated features of Android 3.0 is better gaming with more powerful 3D graphics. As I review the Motorola XOOM lets take a look to see if the gaming has really improved on Android.

The XOOM comes with a few preinstalled games to start you off. First game I looked at is CORDY which is a platform type game. The graphics look solid in this game and controls are easy and the game ran smooth with no signs of lag or frame rate drops from what I could see. Graphics look sharp and gameplay was a smooth experience and fun overall. I then take a look at another game and ran into our first snag.

Gun Bros is also another game that comes "pre-installed" on the XOOM and I put the quotations around that because while you might have it installed you still need to download resource files for the game which can be large and you will want to do on Wi-Fi to avoid data overage charges. There are other games that do the same thing in the Android market when you think you have downloaded what you need but you end up needed to download more before you can play the game. There should be more of a warning for this and they should fine another way for these types of games to get installed even if it means plugging it in USB to a computer.

And even after getting all the files needed for Gun Bros the game would crash before it would open up. You would click on the game think its loading then it would crash out without even an error message explaining why which means you wasted a tone of time and bandwidth for game that doesn't even load. I was able to get the game to load up twice and when loaded up it did play well but it was a fight to get it to load up.

After this debacle I opened up another "pre-Installed" game Dungeon Defenders and after I download all the resource files needed I began playing the game which was another very good locking game that ran well. it a tower defense type game that also included online play as well which I didn't get a chance to get into. Game had pretty smooth frame rate as well.

And for my final game test we went a good old classic Angry Birds Seasons which has been tablet optimized. The Graphics look awesome. Gamplay is smooth. The touch screen controls work great and its Angry Birds what is there not to love!?!

Tablet gaming is something that is definitely fun but will take some getting used to. you will need to get used to using touch screen controls for all your games which won't take too much time and Android 3.0 had definitely push gaming on the Android platform to another level. Graphics look great and games run smooth. What needs to be figured out though is how game are installed and that games need to be either one click from the market and it fully installs or if the download is too big that it may need to be plugged it. This hinders the gaming experience on Android a great deal but once this is figured out they definitely will be a solid competitor in this area of gaming. Right now they just have one foot in the door and need to get the loose ends tied up to get that other foot in.
