The reason why the audience are all middle aged extremely disenthusiastic men, is because most of the audience were people that had just gotten out of prision. They were hired to act as public in a show, but they weren't told what kind of show. Also, they weren't told how they should react or any indications, so in most cases you can see their genuine reaction like in this video. Since the recording took all of the day and part of the night, in the last parts of the special you can see audience members sleeping.
