Being the owner of a 242 turbo and 240 turbo wagon I can tell you for a fact that the 740 and 940 feel and look so much better my two 240s don't feel as stable or as comfortable and are prone to electrical issues. After I bought my 940 turbo wagan I rarely even drive my 240s anymore ....well maybe only the 242 two because it's running 20 pounds of boost it's just not comfortable.... speaking of comfortable getting ready to go pick up a 1996 960/v90 with an inline 6 those things are ultra comfortable👌

I just think that 240 is the best looking volvo.Thats why i would rather have that than 740 or 940.

You just offended me.
The volvo 240 is basically a more modern version of the 140, as it was based on it. It lived on so long coz of its popularity. The 740 IS NOT A 240. The 740 was a new car designed and tested from scratch, and it was volvos biggest success to this date. They wanted a car for the american market, and even in the states the car did well. Thats also why it looks so american (drawn by an american/swedish guy) The 940 is based on the 740 and is just a better version of it, with more modern equipment. The 944 got a new body, but i do think 745/945 shares the same body.
Volvo 140 launched in 1966, Volvo 240 was launched in 1974, 740 in 1984 and the 940 1991.
Even tho the 740 was launched in 1984, the first model of the 700 series, the 760, launched in 1982. This was basically the luxurious model.

Fun fact: the 4 in 740 means that the car has 4 cylinders/its the cheaper model. The 6 in 760 means that the car has 6 cylinders/its the expensive model. This system of names also applies to the 140/160, 240/260 and the 940/960.

Many people think the 240 is the best of the bunch because at its time it was the safest and probably most durable car in the world. My dad always tells me: "If you're gonna do a head on collision with a 240, you might have a better chance to survive if u smack into a truck". Even if this isnt true, the 240 still did have a really strong chassi.
Also, the 940 was the last rear wheel drive car for volvo, the next car would be the fwd volvo 850, which had quite a lot of problems and wasnt such a big hit as the earlier rwd models.

Also, the last for in 244 and the 5 in 245 represents how many doors the car had. 244: 4 door sedan. 245: 5 door wagon.
This way of naming volvo models was officially used of to 1982, with the launch of the 760. But people are today still calling the 940 wagon a 945, even tho thats not really correct

I’m a Volvo lover and have had a number of 240’ s - just recently got a C70 and loving it! I would like a 960 too.

Keep in mind that the 740 turned into the 940 and that the 7 Series Volvos is what saved Volvo from going bankrupt in the 80s

I prefer 240 just because of the classy feel and better looks. Going to sell my 940 turbo classic to get a just 240 :D If it was wagon I would keep it but 940 sedans are pretty meh to me. I have 940 wagon as a project and that I will keep.

you just have to be aware which years had the best models. the 240 was made correct from about 1988 until 1992. the 740 was great in 1992, and the 940's were all pretty much spot in its entire production run. unfortunately the american models were always less equipped. EU models had more classy refinements.

One thing about the 240 that's better than 7 or 940 is weight distribution. The 240 is almost 50/50 where the others are not. And i think it's a bit wrong to call them underpowered. Back in the 70's they compared rather good to the competition. And in the 80's they got upgraded. And they are actually not that heavy. And all Volvo's have good mid range power so driveability are always good if they are in correct condition. But they are not the greatest on high revs, but they were never intended to be.

Kinda late to the party but the 200 series had 3 numbers in the models. First one was 2 for the 200 series, then 4 or 6 for the amount of cylinders and then 2, 4 or 5 for the amount of doors. So e.g. Volvo 242 is a two door 4 cylinder sedan
