The OP I Was Wishing For // @teenageengineering OP-XY First Impressions

I’m thrilled to share my first impressions of the brand-new Teenage Engineering OP-XY! I’ve been hoping to see sequencing come to the larger OP-1 Field form factor, and now it’s here. With the OP-XY, we get the powerful generative features of the OP-Z, new sound engines, and an intuitive workflow. It’s a dream machine for anyone who loves programming patterns and then shaping them live. I’ve only had it for a few days, so this will be a general overview—more to come soon!

I dig your videos but you never go into the cons of a device. It's hard to know if you love everything or just don't want to talk about the negative points. Like the Torso S4 videos you never really touched on the bugs. I would love to see a more rounded overview showing the good and bad.

Man for $2, 299.00 I can buy a Digitone2 & Digitakt2 and still have money left over for groceries and a few bottles of Whiskey. Nice little gadget though.

I can't wait for the medieval version!

I just posted my OP-1f for sale the other day. I passionately hate the workflow and sequencers. The final straw for me was realizing that the OP-1f refuses to be sequenced by my Oxi One, so I can't even workaround the garbage internal sequencers. This OP-XY looks way closer to what I wish the OP-1f was, but at this point, I'm not giving TE another dime.

It’s like they are trrryyyinng to offend people with the price.

"inspired by the iconic, off-road subcultures of dance music all over the world" WTF does this even mean? 😂😂😂😬

OP-WTF

If they don't port at least some of these features into the OP-1f, a $2, 000 device, I'd advocate against investing in this ecosystem.

It's one thing to sell a product WAY above market price and advertise "many more features to come in the form of updates". But to drop an even more expensive product in place of those updates the consumer was promised, is a decidedly anticonsumer practice.

Oh look— exactly what my OP1-Field should have been. For an even higher cost…

Just about everything about the XY is extremely well executed. If you asked me, I'd agree with most of the decisions made. Re-using the milled aluminium case of the OP-1? Clever! Only having to change the interface PCB while keeping the screen, volume LED's, speaker, battery? Perfect! Page view, screen. Built-in MIDI and analog interface, improved engine, sequencer, tracks? Yes!

However, dropping the visual aspect of the OP-Z feels like a cop-out. I LOVED the DMX compatiblity. It was such a unique feature. I would have liked integration with the OP-Z iphone app to ensure continuity.

And that price is just something else. The OP-Z was a very competitive choice in its segment thanks to the comparatively low price.

I understand that the pricing isn't taken out of thin air and this thing is undoubtedly expensive to make, but it really is prohibively expensive compared to the OP-1. The OP-1 doesn't really have competitors in the same way the OP-XY has, and I think it would have been a catch for only slightly less money. At this MSRP however, there are simply far better ways to spend your cash if you want to get grooving.

If they don’t ask you to make a “video”, how’d you know to release the video the second embargo was lifted?

Wished they'd skipped using the OP-1 case and made it slightly larger, that would have killed. Still prohibitively expensive for most at 3 or 4 times the price of an MPC Key 61 for instance.

I don’t get why it has to cost that much.

te is treating this like pokemon. example: op-1 field = pokemon blue and op-xy = pokemon red. but to even the playing field, they should add easier “sequencing/programming” capabilities to make it a bit more user-friendly for the music arrangement experience on the op-1. at the end of the day, it’s just software.

Technically you should be able to do a lot of the sequencing with your op-z through midi to your op-1. The main difference obviously is that you’d be committing the sequences to tape to build and layer. But you would have all of the step components plus you’d still have the video sequencing on top of

Damn this thing is gorgeous. Price is a bit insane but YOLO am I right boys?!

Are there any notable differences in the step components, master track (brain track), arrange mode, punch effects, tape track, and other features compared to the OP-Z? I don’t see significant software or hardware improvements over the OP-Z. Both operate at 16-bit, 44.1 kHz. Aside from changing track patterns in arrange mode, 64-step editing (while still maxing out at 384 steps), live velocity recording (OP-Z also allow step velocity adjustments), and a few other minor enhancements, the differences appear minimal—especially considering the added bulk and cost. With the OP-Z priced at approximately 18.7% of the OP-XY, I’m trying to understand the value justification.

TE has officially become the iphone of music production. Adding features that have been an industry standard for years, at triple the price, but with a unique and pleasing UI. Looks like a lot of fun, just a bummer it is so cost prohibitive

We could easily buy a push 3 standalone or a mpc x for this price or less… or two elektron boxes ? This better be insanely, wildly inspiring

Hey @OoraMusic, thanks for the vid man. Was curious about the background music around 6-7min mark, is it made with XY or no?
