A real fact from the official data book:
A very young Kakuzu was sent by the village elders of Takigakure on a mission to kill Hashirama. Having no other choice, he went so and according to the data book, he lost to Mokuton Hashirama. However, he miraculously survived, after which he was severely punished, imprisoned and tortured. Furious at this injustice, he escaped from prison, killed the village elders, stole Jiongu's forbidden kinjutsu and has since become the nukenin we know from Shippuden. Unfortunately there are no more details as the data books descriptions are rather general.
