I worked at GameStop for 11 years and in that time we sold retro games on and off. It was a complete scam and lawsuits led us to quitting over and over.

If ur buying old carts, always open em up before you purchase. If the store wont do that for you, run

The Game Informer magazine was the only reason I even kept my Platinum membership before I boycotted them years ago. I could go on a rant about how they screwed me on my 100k in points I had saved up from purchases over the years too... but that's a story for another time. Bottom line is that the only reason they are around right now is due to the stock short that took place a few years ago that actually made them valuable again. I wish that never would've happened.

Is it me, or does GameStop just refuse to die?

I got a fake ChronoTrigger shipped from Gamestop's online warehouse center. Returned it at the local Gamestop explaining that the actual game inside the shell was Art of Fighting and not ChronoTrigger. It was returned to the warehouse and likely resold to someone else to have the same issue. Gamestop will fail because of this type of carelessness. They do not care period.

The only people that would sell retro games to GameStop are the ones who don’t actually own them. Elderly people, parents and the stupid.

As a retro collector, I hope that they don’t snatch up all the good games and then hold a monopoly on the collector’s market. I worry that GameStop greed might hurt end up hurting the collecting community.

Can you imagine anyone even thinking of spending $299.99 (what?!) on a game like Chrono Trigger for the SNES, and then get it home and find out it's actually Pit Fighter for the SNES. That is the most underhanded up thing to do to somebody. This is why I always ask the sellers on eBay what I want to know when it comes to buying games, and whenever they choose give me the run-around over what I request, "Bye, Felicia!"

Another issue is people buying like a legitimate mega man X super Nintendo cartridge from Gamestop then before the week is up, returning a fake one and the stooge behind the counter will never know the difference.

You are the OG Gamestop guy that shares horror stories. Funny how they are desperate to try to make renevue buy competing with mom and pop retro game stores.

"Game rental service?" why would anyone use that with the 7 day no questions asked return policy on used games? lol

I think fake carts with the correct ROMs can be bought cheap. Next time it will look like Earthbound and it really will be Earthbound. But that cart will be fake.

Is GameStop gonna let people open the carts to see a) if they’re cleaned and b) if they’re not repros?

Gamestop honestly just needs to do the work and do it right if they wanna try the retro game selling. Take in retro games. Provides the tools to make sure they’re not fake games, test them, etc. for most cartridge games it just takes a star screwdriver and pictures from PriceCharting to see if carts and circuit boards are valid. Most cartridges have tells on them that show they’re real vs fake. There are plenty of retro game stores that do it and profit from it as well. We’ll see what happens.

Love the retro consoles.
15 years ago i came across a boxed nes with the gun and the Styrofoam etc from a thrift shop for 20bucks.
Still got it wrapped up in a cupboard.

There are still many that buy "Retro physical games" . I personally spend over $1000 a year minimum as I know thousands of other people are doing the same. The issue with GameStop is that they are charging market price for retro titles and their store doesn't offer an experience or enough variety. Any retro buyer is either going to buy lots of games for cheap or wants a good deal on single titles. Neither of which GameStop will offer.
