Crosscutting Concept 5: Matter and Energy - Flows, Cycles and Conservation

In this video Paul Andersen explains how matter and energy flow and cycle through systems. He starts by explaining how energy and matter input and output will always be conserved. He addresses the many misconceptions surround energy and matter including the belief that food contains energy. He explains how nuclear reactions conserve both batter and energy. The video ends with a teaching progression for grades K-12.

This is just for the YouTube community. The new AP Biology curriculum fits within the NGSS nicely. They even added science practices. This video series is designed for teachers more than students. Hope you are having a great year. I enjoyed your visit this fall.

A lot of people feel respect for the persons who taught. Thanks.

Thanks so much for doing these. While I'm no longer teaching in the states (I'm at an international school), we're currently looking back over our curriculum, so this has given me a lot of food for thought.

I love your videos Paul and use them in both my basic chemistry and physics classes. One concept that I find difficult to teach is buoyancy. Our text mixes displacement, weight, force, and density, which is confusing. You have such a knack for explaining. I hope you will consider this topic for a future video.

I have a question about energy.  When I get to this unit I teach energy as the ability to do work.  When you mentioned energy drinks being a misconception that energy is added, would your response to students be that energy drinks may act as a catalyst to help the molecules in the food do work or release energy?

Is it copyright for another website to use this video, because the one im using, DiscoveryK12 is using this video.

Or put differently, when your quantity mass equals your quantity weight depends on the used unit-system.
I guess you could use g as unit in which case you get the same weight and mass on Earth... But when you usually use SI-units, you have to add that to the explanation.

and now, how to convert energy into mass back?

Hey Paul. Are you planning on having your students watch these new Next Generation Science Standards videos, or is this just for your YouTube community? I was curious if you're planning on overhauling your curriculum to adapt to the NGSS?

When u mention energy drink and energy bar they are referring 2 different meanings. The drink has caffeine which give a person motivation or mental energy and reduces fatigue. Energy bars are full of carbs to give a person sustenance to power the body.

also have a question, wouldn't the amount of water change based on any chemical reactions involving water such as photosynthesis(decreasing the amount of water), combustion(increasing it), etc. Articles say that each year 1000s of tons of CO2(maybe more or less can't remember exact amount) produced each year from burning fossil fuels; since combustion products are CO2 & H2O would there be tons of water also being produced?

Actually you didnt define matter and energy. Specially, energy is hard to define. Because we dont know what energy is. We only know that can provide the ability to do work but no why.

Mass and weight aren't the same on our planet. You weigh about 10x more Newton than you have kg in mass. The number values would only be the same if the Earth's gravitational pull were exactly 1m/s².

hye Paul, may I know what software do you use to make this very comprehensive video.

Also would you teach that food molecules have potential energy that can be converted to thermal energy in food calories?

ok but wtf is energy and matter but like dumb it down and give that ez ez definition
