I don't know why, but I absolutely hate the Avenger. I've heard the arguments from both sides. Don't care. It's something deeper than that. It's ethereal. It strikes at my soul. I just _despise_ this thing. It is a pure, unbridled hatred, the likes of which you'd expect to find in a Shakespearean tragedy.

We had a Stinger team in Italy that jumped man pad stingers.
They were great guys.

This is a good light close in air defense system. It does have some shortfalls, like that stingers are expensive compared to light drones, that the .50 is a single barrel with only 400 rounds, and that it cant handle long range engagements.
These are somewhat acceptable given that it is meant to thriw on the back of a humvee and not as a high end long range or high capacity air defense system. It basically helps to escort convoys as a last resort air defense and does really well for that role. If you had a convey of a dozen trucks and needed some armor to escort, you migh lt also include an avenger or two for air defense.

I was there when the first Avengers ADA vehicles were deployed during Operation Desert Shield/Storm. They spent most of their time protecting high value locations like the division headquarters and such.

The avenger is my absolute favorite low cost weapon system. My only modern gripe is that she just can’t do her job right anymore. She’s just in a weird there’s cheaper options and I can get the job done era. Fortunately after putting tens of thousands of troops at ease with her presence my favorite low cost system is coming to a changing of the guards.

Stingers are useless unless your enemy is unaware of you but that kind of goes for all MANPADS
