I Review a Ford F250 SuperDuty 7.3L Godzilla Gas V8 Engine as a Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic. This engine Produces 430 Horse Power and I go over thing I like about this engine. I also talk about common issues/problems with the 7.3L gas engine including the lifter failures.

I hope everyone is having a good weekend! I finally got my hands on the notorious 7.3L Godzilla engine from Ford. you guys have been wanting me to review this engine for a while so here it is!

First off I love that this large gas engine in the f250 superduty's is made in Windsor Ontario Canada. after reading that I was probably a little bias but overall I really like this engine.

I think that ford going to a simple push rod v8 engine is going to greatly improve reliability for these engines as well as give you guys a good strong engine. Ford really seemed to listen to the consumer.

The main reason why I think ford wanted to design this engine was to have a viable replacement for the 6.7 powerstroke. most fleets now a days are tired of dealing with modern diesel engines and having a simple powerful reliable gas option is a perfect alternative to the very complex and expensive diesel options.

now there main downside to the 7.3L gasser right now is the potential lifter failure issue. It seems like the lifter roller and cam shaft lobes are having the hardening shave off and send metal throughout the engine.

personally I think this has something to do with fords variable displacement oil pump only putting out like 6 psi of pressure at idle. and it also seems that these lifter failures are coming from trucks with high idle time. but only time will tell what exactly is really going on.

I do think the issue is a little overblown but it does seem like this may actually be an issue unlike what ford is saying.

I hope you guys liked the video!

I spend a lot of my waking life watching truck you tube videos, so far, yours have been the most the most impartial no BS examples and I appreciate it so much

People seem to forget not long ago, 1995, we were towing with a pig 460 that had 200 horses and the torque ran out at 2000 rpm’s. And got 8 miles to the gallon no matter what.

I work at the Godzilla plant, thanks for the shout out ! That being said, just like in the old cheesy movies, the 6.8 L is known here as baby Godzilla!

Im glad Ford went back to 2 valves and pushrods. Overhead cams are great for the Mustang but they dont belong in a truck. I shouldn't have to touch a cam to replace a head gasket on a workhorse truck that needs to be back in service ASAP.

Love the Godzilla. I have 2020 F350 Tremor with 4.30 gears & pull a 14, 000 lb. 5th wheel. I have 83, 000 miles 25, 000 towing. Only issue has been plug wires. The 10 speed grade shifts beautifully. I put a 50 gallon gas tank in the bed so I do not have to pull into gas stations with this huge rig. I have towed all over the western United States, and had no issues with elevation or grade. This is the best pick up I have ever owned. Love the Upfitter switches I use them with my off-road lights. I installed electronic runningboards best idea yet.

I took possession of my 2022 Godzilla in October of 21. So far the drivetrain is rock solid. I have had zero issues. I do change my oil every 5k miles. I have 23k miles on it. I love this thing, and would recommend it to anyone.

I owned a 6.7 Powerstroke Super Duty. The engine itself was excellent--its downfall, the same with ALL current generation HD pickup diesels, is the emission system. Extended idling, short distance trips, and light load use will cause no end of expensive problems with the diesel emission system. 20 years ago, fleet buyers that had pickups with extended idle cycles, etc. would buy diesels because of their more frugal fuel use under such conditions. Today, those fleet buyers are largely avoiding diesel pickups like the plague because of the emission issues.

I have a ‘20 and I did have to get 1 spark plug wire replaced. No delaminating yet at 45k miles. The truck is reliable, has plenty of power to pull my camper and skid steer. Great video, keep ‘‘em coming!

I'm running a '22 F350 SRW standard bed with the 7.3 / 4.30 / AT tires. Payload is 4, 000#. Been pulling a 16, 500# fifth wheel between Illinois, Missouri, and Florida. Runs like a champ! My RV is higher profile, so I hesitate to head out west where it's super windy with the SRW, but I've been in the Tennessee mountains. No issues whatsoever. I do (very rarely) get a hard shift in low gears. Was crawling through the wal-mart parking lot the other day and the transmission shifted so hard at about 3mph that I thought someone had rear ended me! But again, it's only happened a couple times. Going to be watching my oil like a hawk though! Already have 30k miles on it as we are full-time RVrs. Love this engine!

Ford should get ahead of this problem and swap the oil pump for the proper one!!!

These things pretty much came from the factory as performance engines the only thing they were missing performance wise were higher compression forged pistons and a lobey cam and that's it. You can boost these things to the sky. I was impressed when i learned about them

5:14 THANK YOU! Coming from someone who has owned the 6.7 and moved to this 7.3 (and love it). The 7.3 is easily my favorite of the two. No drama.

I have a 22 with the 7.3 L and 3.55 rear end. I have 18000 miles on it and it has been great. Love the engine, love the transmission. I think most complaints about the transmission are because it shifts differently than say a 6 speed does. You just have to get use to it. As for hard shifting I rarely feel it shift. And boy when you get on it hard that 10 speed just keeps you in the best torque range. From the bottom of an on ramp to the top I can be doing 80 mph! I love it.

26k miles on my ‘21 with zero issues so far. Oil analysis is not showing any signs of wear or lifter failure so I’m fairly confident I dodged that bullet. Transmission has recently stopped with the hard shifts when cold, but it will occasionally fumble a shift from 3rd to 4th with a slight lurch. I do run a 5Star performance tune though so it could be their trans tuning causing it.

Overall the best looking and most fun truck I’ve owned even over my 6.7 Cummins. The DEF and price of fuel sucked all the fun out of owning a diesel.

We you asked for my thoughts lol! I have a 2022 F350 7.3 Tremor that I do love. The engine is the heart and the oil is the lifeblood of any vehicle, so it gets synthetic oil changes every 10K or less. I tow a toy hauler of say about 9500lbs occasionally. I do like the 4.30 gears. In the meantime it is a daily driver and despite its huge size, my wife loves it too! We have taken it to SC for a trip and it performed fantastic!

Next week we will be going to Moab UT, Monument Valley UT, and Sedona AZ hauling the trailer, from Ontario. The proof will be in the pudding over the next few weeks regarding reliability and capability. The trans does shift hard sometimes but I find that is unloaded and during shifts in the city.

Economy wise, I can get 16 mpg in the truck when empty and just taking it easy at 90-95K on back highways or roads...but typically 14-15 mpg is easily achievable doing an hour run or longer at reduced speeds as above. Towing is obviously quite different and I am looking forward to seeing how it works out over this long haul.

If you are interested, I will give you an update in a few weeks and some video/photo content to go with it. Great to see your view on the Godzilla!

YES, ALEX FINALLY REVIEWS THE GAS TRUCK BEAST!

Also should note, 400 lb-ft of torque are made at 1500 rpm. For a naturally aspirated engine, I like it's low end ALOT!

My father and I deliver campers part-time in the United States and bought 2 of the 2021 f350 single rear wheel 7.3L running the 3.73 gear ratio one had a lifter failure at 82000 miles so we had the cam lifters and oil pump replaced and are currently at 107000 miles on that one. The other one has 156000 miles both are running strong with that being said the main problem we have had is actually melting the sparkplug wires. In my opinion the main thing killing these engines is the programming while using cruse control or running them like a Chevy 350 from 1975. If you start down or up a hill it can bring the RPM up around 5K to try and maintain the desired speed. Don't get me wrong, I love this engine and the 10 speed transmission and would gladly buy it again, but that is where I believe the failure is coming from

This guy has done his homework.

I have a 2022, F-250, 4x4, 4.30s. I came from a 2016 chevy 3500, 4.10s, and it’s no comparison. I really do like it. Pulls awesome, runs great. Yes the 10 speed is a little rough. If you pull it out of park into drive before you let the engine idle down it is very rough going into drive. Every once in a while if your driving very easy around a parking lot or something it will get confused on what gear to go to. Other than that i really like it.
