In Theaters and on Hulu July 2

In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary—part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was never seen and largely forgotten–until now. SUMMER OF SOUL shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present. The feature includes never-before-seen concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Ray Baretto, Abbey Lincoln & Max Roach and more.

Summer of Soul premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award. It will stream on Hulu in conjunction with Disney’s new BIPOC Creator Initiative; Searchlight Pictures will release it theatrically.

Every man, woman and child with any soul in their body should make this film a must see! The message back then still resonates today . I was only 2 yrs old when these great artists were laying the grooves down, but I grew up loving the music and still only listen to these 60's and 70's sounds! Love it!

Black history, so buried not even black people knew about it. What an amazing rediscovery & what a time to have found it again. I know so much is bad, bt this kind of thing makes this an amazing time to be alive.

I saw this film in Nottingham yesterday and it’s extraordinary, both the performances and the brilliant way Questlove has put the footage together to tell several intersecting stories. If you have any interest in popular music do not miss this film.

Can't wait to see this! Just heard an interview about it, one family had no photos of their brother who died in Vietnam, but he was miraculously filmed at this concert, so his family got to see him again!

If your diggin on this I highly recommend Zaire 74. I think the movie is called Soul Power. It's worth watching just for the jam session on the plane ride over.

UK musician here. I have worked in Clubs with black musicians who've had to sit through racist jokes from comedians years ago. I've seen into their eyes and the hurt in their souls as everyone laughed in a haze of alcohol and smoke. Yeah, I was making music in '69 too. Racism has reared it's ugly head in the UK this past week. Looking forward to seeing this :)

The Fifth Dimension. Stevie Wonder. Nina Simone. Watching Nina Simone sing "To Be Young Black And Gifted" was transformative, summoning the spirit of James Baldwin in C Major.

But man oh man, Sly and the Family Stone...WOW!!!
