Halloween or Samhain as its known here in Ireland is most definitely a pagan festival, if your a Muslim like me we dont celebrate it. However I do give little treats to my neighbours children ( small toddlers) as they dont understand why i dont celebrate it and knock on my door so excited to show me their dress up. Allah knows my intent, inshallah

I work in retail and my boss is Muslim. We were organizing the Halloween section the other day and she was telling me how much time she had to spend in that section and how she now knew were everything was in the mess. I went “Do you even celebrate Halloween?” And when she said no I said “So the resident Halloween section expert of the store…doesn’t even celebrate Halloween “ and we both started laughing really hard at the pure irony.

For anyone interested in the roots of Halloween, I'm a Christopagan(I specifically work with the Celtic Gods), and I wanted to give y'all an overview of what it is and the origins of it!

Halloween was originally Samhain(Pronounced So-win), celebrated in pre-christian Ireland and Scotland as a festival to honour your deceased ancestors, and acknowledged as a time when the veil between our world and the otherworld(the afterlife) was the thinnest, allowing spirits from that world to come into ours, and vice versa, it was also the last of 3 harvest festivals, and a time of celebration, reflection and feasting. It was also the Celtic New Year, so people would often reflect on the last year and think about what they wanted to bring into the next.

After Ireland and Scotland were taken over by the English and converted to Catholicism, Samhain was turned into All Hallows' Eve or All Saints Day, a day to honour all the Saints in the Catholic Church, they still kept a lot of the same celebrations as Samhain was such an important holiday to the Pagans.

In the modern era All Hallows' Eve or All Saints Day became Halloween, and is mostly a secular, commercialized holiday for the most part, however there are still many Catholics and Pagans who celebrate the precursors.

Another fun fact, before people carved pumpkins they'd carve turnips :)

I am Christian and we don't celebrate it in our household either. I grew up celebrating it and now get no end of grief from my immediately family (especially my mom) for not letting my son trick or treat. Just yesterday I was shamed for it by her again. This made me feel a little less alone. Thank you!

Just for the people confused Halloween orignated in Ireland!
It’s originally called Samhain which is Gaeilge (Irish) for November. It is not a Christian festival at all it is for anyone who wishes to participate it was originally a Pagan festival. For anyone that knows The day of the dead / El dia los Muertos its used to be similar. It was only during The Great Irish Famine ( not much food) when some Irish people emigrated to America in search of food and better life they brought the Samhain tradition with them the Americans adopted this festival aswell and renamed it Halloween

Oh I didn't know that second part but it makes sense. I'm a Slavic Pagan and my religion also prevents me from observing other religions' holidays but there is no rule against wishing someone else a Happy Halloween or whatever other holiday they are celebrating. An interesting difference!

Im okay with not celebrating Halloween, but Christmas will be hard, because it’s not about the holiday itself, for me it’s just about being with my family and giving to them out of love. I don’t have to acknowledge it as a holiday at all. My family never liked the consumerism of these holidays anyway, shouldn’t have to go broke just to be with your family and show that you care about them enough to know what kind of things they enjoy and gift it to them.

I'm not Muslim but I love Islam, inshallah one day I can revert. This Halloween I wanted to go to ask for candys but I get sick and my parents say that I can't go. I know that Allah SWT is guiding me to don't celebrate Halloween.

But wishing others a happy halloween you are being respectful to others cultures and traditions. You don’t have to celebrate, but you can be happy for someone else and wish them a fun day.

As you don’t celebrate Halloween but as you don’t, I wish you a ‘Happy end of October day’ (if that’s ok), I love learning.

(I like the candy and dressing up parts of the holiday but I’m not into the horror parts, never was, I prefer not to get scared).

Muslims celebrating Halloween I find it really difficult

By being Muslim and wishing someone "happy Halloween" you just admit that they celebrate it and you're just wishing them to have a good time. Nothing more. It's not a religious thing. It's a cultural thing. We don't have it in my country or my religion. But it's fine to wish someone during this to have a good time. Chill a bit. Impermissible... What a tough word.

I am Christian and will tell you that it's a secular holiday.
But some things are pagan. So we avoid that aspect. But we dress up and play trick and tweet.

The last point is irrational...so, at the same way should an atheist NOT give a "happy Ramadan" to muslims?

What about avoiding things that actually cause harm? I'll never know why that isn't the base belief system of all religions.

I wish my Muslim, Jewish, and Christian friends a happy holiday to whomever celebrates, no matter what holiday it is. The events and special times my friends and family celebrate make me happy, and I am glad to wish them a happy celebration, even though I don’t celebrate along with them or follow their beliefs. Never considered even once they might think I believe in their religion if I wish them a happy holiday.

You said something that people will take and purposely use for their advantages, like "I as a Christian should not wish others "Bajram serif mubarek olsun", because by wishing that, I'm acknowledging that I agree with Muslim religion that Jesus Christ wasn't the Savior but just only a prophet. "
