After he HAD EXERCISED, he took a shower.
We have an action that took place before another one in the past, so we should use the past perfect.

Hi madam,
Can we use the given structure in present simple?
For instance:

Thanks in advance.

Isn't it easier if the time clause is past tense and the main clause is present tense? For example, the students come flooding into the cafeteria after the exam ended. Or should that time clause use present perfect instead of simple past? If yes, why? 🤔

You don't think that you should have said : "Before he took a shower, he HAD EXERCISED" ?
