"I work seasonal jobs, last year I was in Antarctica." Well that's not how I expected that sentence to end.

Conan would still get a sunburn during an Antarctic winter.

this girl is awesome. inspirational how she's psyched to embark on a journey most people would cower in fear over. the bravery it would take.

It's very impressive she got to work at McMurdo and is going back. I researched this a few years ago, for any of the American bases, especially McMurdo and the South Pole station, it is extremely competitive to get a job. There are basically scientists there and then support staff like herself, and for the latter, it's near damn impossible to get a job. Doesn't matter what the job is, "janitor" doesn't really mean the same thing there as it does in the real world. I mean astronauts on the ISS are more or less janitors 90% of the time, it's still an extremely competitive and demanding job that you have to go above and beyond to do well. Especially for the winter assignment, that's even more difficult to get because you have to go through extra screening and already have experience living in a harsh environment. Planes can't really land there in the winter because their fuel freezes - it's possible but very tricky, so the staff has to be self sufficient for several months. It makes sense that it's competitive, Antarctica is almost impossible to visit as a tourist, so lots of people want to experience living there.

Anthony Bourdain did a fantastic episode on McMurdo for Parts Unknown and the community down there is like a miniature version of what the world should be. Everyone working together, respecting each other, relying on each other, having fun together, and they all believe in science/facts. They even mentioned in the episode how important the janitors are to the base

I listened to this ep when it came out, just now seeing the video and she does not look like what I pictured. She's lovely. I really enjoyed her stories and her energy.

Love her enthusiasm! I'm simultaneously really fascinated about visiting such remote places, while also feeling concerned that we should avoid going to those places and tread lightly in general. But to work and/or study and see the world away from the tourist traps is so cool and rewarding, I'm so glad I got to live and be (junior) crew on a working ship for a quarter in college and visit lots of places away from regular tourist destinations, I hope everyone finds a way to do something like that sometime in their life!

The janitor on an Antarctic base in the winter is the first to get eaten by the alien monster...

When Conan went on that hike with Kevin he had a nurse following him with a crash cart

Conan and Jordan in an Antarctic base would be a perfect remote.

Love the pod, love the dynamic you guys have, just wish the full pod with video was available to watch from start to finish. I'm not sure how many people are out there like me, but I'm so used to having video podcasts on playing off to the side while I work that I now struggle to get engrossed in audio only podcasts.

@TeamCoco, I just bumped into this podcast just now, and was delighted! About 2 or so years ago, I have no idea why (Conan Without Borders probably planted the seed, especially in Greenland), but I started fantasizing about Conan and Flula Borg doing a segment in Antarctica, mostly about life in McMurdo Station. I thought it would be perfect! I even thought about contacting Team Coco somehow, but fierce procrastination and other distractions, and chickeness kept me from doing so.
Well, seeing this brought it all back! I'm about to do my 8th season in Antarctica, including a few winters, and a couple of full years, so I can tell you that yes, Conan could indeed checkout Antarctica, it would be an amazing show!

Conan, you could submit a proposal to the National Science Foundation as a media personality, as long as you entice viewers to the scientific work occurring there. Anyway, I think it's something you would do fantastically!

From the USAP website (United States Antarctic Program):

Lol was not expecting her to be so bright and colorful based off what she was talking about - was definitely expecting someone more grunge and dark

I think there's been a couple of podcast episodes where Conan experienced organ failure live on air, and I blame Matt 🤣

I used to love reading polar thrillers. There's a good one called Dark Winter by William Dietrich, that someone reviewed as "agatha christie in antarctica". Not sure about that (she's hard to top haha) but I enjoyed it immensely. Just long dark mysterious nights in the southern winter
