// Listen with headphones for best experience //

Join Senior Textile Conservator Susana Fajardo as she works with a costume worn by musician PJ Harvey on the cover of her seventh studio album, 'White Chalk'. Designed and made by Harvey's collaborator Annie Mochnacz, the costume features appliquéd and machine embroidered lyrics from the songs 'Grow Grow Grow' and 'The Devil'.

Sound designer and performance-maker Julie Rose Bower has documented Susana’s steps using ambisonic sound, letting us get closer to the object than ever before.

Watch as the garment is carefully assessed before Susana decides on an approach for conservation. She inserts padded arms which bring the sleeves to life, examines the intentional "distressed" nature of the garment, and arranges loose threads without losing sight of the original design intention.

Conservation process:
Inserting soft arms to give the costume shape: 00:38
Looking at the intentional "distress" of the costume: 01:14
Untangling and arranging loose threads: 03:06
Photograph of PJ Harvey wearing the costume at the Royal Festival Hall, 2007: 05:17

To the people complaining about lack of gloves- it's clear you've never tried to work with organic fabrics while gloved. They absolutely increase the probability of damage and snagging because they are cumbersome and grip unpredictably. They also heat your hands enough to potentially cause changes in vulnerable dyes and finishes over extended periods. Conventional clothing has already been exposed to body oils and handling anyway, those changes are already happening. Source: someone who works with these fabrics daily.

PJ Harvey is one of the music giants of our time, and she truly deserves to be featured at the V&A, I'm glad!

My only complaint: such a short video. We need 30 minutes, I would watch 1 hour! 5 minutes is not enough 🥺🥺🥺

I'm so glad you shared even this much, but I was hoping to see some of her actual conservation work like with the Sadie dress. I love that and the clown costume video to pieces for that reason!!
