// Listen with headphones for best experience //

Follow Senior Textile Conservator Susana Fajardo in this ASMR video as she works on a golden tabard worn by Ian McKellen for his performance in Shakespeare's Richard II from 1968 – 1970.

She focusses on the importance of handling an object correctly, especially when dealing with delicate theatre and performance costumes. These garments have often had many lives – having been repaired quickly for the stage and stored in ways which can make preservation difficult, so extra special care must be taken whilst in contact with them.

Process:
Does a conservator need to wear gloves? 00:27
Why is correct handling of an object important? 01:00
Silk pads: 01:31
How can needle damage be reduced? 02:09
Are theatre costumes hard to preserve? 02:36
Photograph of Ian McKellen wearing the gold tabard in Richard II: 03:42

to the people in the comment saying this isn't ASMR:
ASMR is the sensation that sounds may cause, it's in your brain so what certain people tingle to will be different. It doesn't have to feature whispering, tapping noises or eating sounds to be ASMR.

This is soft-spoken, it's relaxing, has great audio quality and it may count as ASMR by those that get voice tingles or just flat out use these videos for relaxation. Please don't be gate keepers, you're not the only one whose opinion matters.

It’s a little funny seeing a theatre costume being handled with such caution. I know for sure it wasn’t treated quite that delicately when it was part of an active production 😄

I would love to see Ian McKellen react to this.

As well as being designed by Tim Goodchild as credited at the end, the costume was made by Susanna Wilson - the whole costume not just the tabard. Some of the materials came from the shop Continental Trimmings in Manchester. Both Tim and Susanna are very much still around btw.

1: There are some very talented and patient people in this world.

How do you get started working in conservation and restoration? This is my number one dream job but I have no idea where to begin. I do careful tasks like this all the time in every job I’ve had and even in my daily life. It would be a dream come true to be able to work in this field.
