I think manuals are definitely way more fun to drive, however I feel like automatics just get too much hate. New automatics are faster and shift so smoothly, if you're a drag racer or number chaser you can't go wrong with an auto. Not to mention, some cars are wayyy more expensive in the manual trim than an automatic trim. End of the day, just buy what makes you happy and who fucking cares what anyone else thinks.

I personally enjoy manual, I drive one. But those dual clutch automatics are fast af.

Manual gearbox centers the stick on it's own, so if you money shift... it's your fault. Either for using it wrong or not maintaining the bushings.

I learned to drive a manual in college, and it was amazing. "Feeling closer to the car" is the perfect description for that feeling.
But electric cars don't have transmissions. It's a magic that will be lost to the ages.

Coming from an auto IS300 to a manual E36 was such a huge difference. Never thought I’d giggle like a Japanese school girl going through gears myself. Both are fun, but manual definitely a more fun time.

There was a time when manual was better, but modern autos are definitely superior to manual, no doubt about it. That being said...I, personally, still prefer manual for the fun and engagement factor. I would never pretend I can shift faster than a modern auto though.

For the average commuter I think it depends on where you drive. I love my 6 spd and love the chance to drive it but if I had to drive in city gridlock all the time I'd give up the fun of manual to have a less stressful driving experience. it really depends on where and how you drive

There's a lot of satisfaction in small things done well. A crisp gear change, revs matched perfectly is one of them.

Going through the gears is fun. I do appreciate just putting my foot down in a commute but that’s when driving becomes boring to me.

Honestly, i love manuals way more, but look on this in thes way: Automatic gearboxes have a huuuuge advantage in a comercial transport. Trucks, vans, and particlary taxi, where the driver often spends 8+ hours at day behind the wheel working, automatic transmission saves so much fatique to the driver

Modern day “Automatics” (torque converter automatics and DCTs) are pretty much “better” than manuals in every single way.
They are faster, more fuel efficient, adaptable and “easier” to drive.

But I prefer manuals, because i find them more enjoyable.
Just like i prefer to use “hand tools” when working on cars.

Best motoring in Japan did a video a few years ago of manuals vs early flappy paddle gear boxes on tsukuba and the manual versions of the cars all won

I think it depends on the car to a degree. Almost all of my favourite cars have been manuals. My 1990 Mazda MX-5 was the most fun I’ve ever had in a car. My right hand and left foot became part of the car, and a little part of me would die if someone I cared about wanted an automatic Miata.

I had several Beetles, all manual, except for a ‘74 orange automatic stick shift. But that’s another story. During the minivan years, I can’t even imagine what a thankless and unsatisfying chore using a manual in that thing would have been. Finally, most of today’s sports cars are so powerful and torquey that you shift once to 100kmh. What’s the fun of having a stick and clutch when you barely use it to get the car moving, unless you’re on the track. And commuting with a manual in stop and go traffic gets old really fast.

So, more to consider than just either/or. I am having fun with my latest car with a dual clutch, different driving method though, which should be talked about more.

The Facts are:
Manuals are fun. If your a good driver vs a bad driver it will show and if your bad it will push you to get better. Overall it's fun. But I do hate seeing people that REALLY can't drive Manual and would these roll through a stop sign or roll the car for 200 feet+ because they suck at driving Manual.

But Autos are nice to cruze in and daily drivers.

To each their own but I think a lot of people publicly worship manuals to try to look cool to other car guys. I'm all for people liking what they like but it's annoying when people go over the top to try to be down. There are people who don't give a shit about cars who can drive stick... It's really not that big of a deal

Auto. for heavy slow city traffic as well as max preformance speed.

Manual for driving enjoyment, feeling like you going fast, even if you are not and what I'd call the "therapy" of just taking your pride and joy out for a drive on a backroad and enjoying going through the gears. Nothing can beat that in my world.

I am 59 and only drive manuals, you have so much more control over your vehicle, which makes them safer to drive.
