My artificial light setup for Orchids

Due to popular demand, here is my LED light set up that you keep seeing in my videos!
▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼

As the thumbnail says this is an LED light setup, consisting not of LED strips of lamps.. but LED spot lights. Each spotlight is wide angle, so the light beam is not focused on a small surface. The fixtures are store bought and they are chained together along the shelf.

The bulbs are 4.5 w and 3k color temperature. Along along them there is also a strip of LED's that is set on blue. Before this fixture I had LED strips and.. let's just say thy did not work for me.

A proper setup would be a lot more consistent than this, but I also have natural light for a lot of the time, so I only need to compensate for a few hours of the day. I also keep under lights my least light requiring plants.

There are also grow bulbs on the market that have a pretty horrible pink light to the eye, but plants sure love them. Due to my filming and other activities that is out of the question for me. Also the fact that I have natural light would make them an over kill.

Dollar for dollar the best bet in my opinion is a dual T8 shop light with 6, 500K light band 48" inch,  Daylight bulbs by GE, 2, 900 lumens, F32. Bought at Walmart. They don't run hot, are easily moved, and cover a nice sized area. Bulbs last a VERY long time.I just bought a pair of these dual lamp fixtures, with 4 bulbs for about $38. I grow rare cactus from seed, some Pinon pines, and also edible foods. In AZ here we are in the 30's overnight now, so growing fragile stuff is all done indoors. You have a great channel, I am glad I found it.

I have started growing under lights too. I only have a single CFL 125W bulb. It was originally to help get me through the winter with higher light plants but I might keep using it in summer because the growth is much better!

Thank you Dani, this video will be quite usefull when, hopefully, I manage to put artificial light in the greenhouse for the winter months :)

Omg Danny, I love your greenhouse! If my greenhouse looked that gorgeous, I'd want to stay there forever.

Right now I just need something portable I have 2 Phal. I will get more I’m sure of it. Don’t have a window with good light because I have solar screens on windows. I’ve seen some on EBay but not sure of the correct bulbs to grow orchids. Thank you for your time an video’s. 😊. I just found a newer video on lighting you got. I’ll watch it see if it helps!

So pretty! Now all you need is a lounge chair in there to read and take naps in while looking at your orchids :)

Thank you so much Danni for sharing this video :-) I haven't grown plants with artificial lights yet but am really thinking of looking into it in the future especially as I will be moving house next year and I am not sure of what light I will be able to have to grow my plants in the new home, growing with lamps is brilliant especially if you want to add additional light during the dark winters :-) thanks so much for sharing and sending you tons of love and heaps of happy growing from Ireland for a fantastic day XXXX <3

I love your setup. I have a more simpler setup. I had to incorporate led grow lights in my grow space. I'm confused though. I grew all my Orchids outside during the summer and my brassavola nodosa would only turn purple and wouldn't bloom. I've been using these lights for about a month and their greener and is I'm bud. My paph. is about to bloom and my phal. is also spike. I'm liking the results better then growing outdoors.

I think your lighting idea is awesome! I am all about making things work that are not necessarily made for it if i saves some money :) So cool, and i think it really looks great! I don't have a grow room so i just turn on the LED overhead light because it is VERY grey here all the time. I hope that will be enough for my phal.

Hi, Danny. I'm in the process of moving my orchids from windowsills to a completely artificial environment in the basement. Lighting has proven to be a challenge, but I'm very close to having it worked out. (I have an phalaenopsis that I'm using to test the setup, and it's really responding well.)

I agree that the blue/red combination of grow lights is difficult to look at, so I use warm LEDs in addition to grow lights purely for my eyes. I'll do a video myself once the setup is complete.

If any of you are thinking of using grow lights, be careful of panels with UV and infrared lights -- especially if you spend a lot of time in the same room. Those lights are primarily intended for grow tents as they can potentially damage your eyes.

This setup looks really nice, and I was thinking when you showed the spectrum of the spotlights that maybe the blue led strips could compensate adding the blue, and I didn't know it was intentional. :) The greenhouse looks beautiful!

is it just a trick of the camera, or are those lights on the dim side? In your video on lighting for orchids, you had a link to a foot candles chart for the different types and it was saying you need like 1200 foot candles even for low light orchids, and even really close to my light bulbs, I'm only getting like 400. is it maybe the app on my phone not reading it right? or am I missing something?

Mabye you could hang some lights from the ceiling ? Or just add another set of shelves and keep supplies on top

HI DANI, NOTING THAT WE HAVE DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS [I'M IN CALIFORNIA] HOW LONG DO YOU KEEP THE LIGHTS ON? I HAVE FULL SPECTRUM LED LIGHTS....THANKS

Giasu Danny, let me give  you a suggestion.. the light that hits the wall is lost, so if use a reflecting surface like aluminum foil, part of the rays will go back to your grow space, ... also  the bad insects are disoriented by the light coming from different directions  and that makes it harder for them to zoom on  your plants. Kallo Himona !!

Pick up a light meter so you can know exactly how many lumens your lights are giving off. BTW- In my setup I use a combination of 6500K for veg and 2700K for bloom
