Look, this is arguably the most important segment of my NordVPN week, and that is answering a question asked time and time again: “Can you trust NordVPN?”
------------------------------------------------
🇵🇦 NordVPN jurisdiction
------------------------------------------------
To kick off this NordVPN privacy review, let’s take a look at its base of operation. Is NordVPN safe from data retention laws? According to Panama’s laws - yeah, and that’s where NordVPN is operating from. Besides, this country is far away from intelligence-sharing alliances, a great jurisdiction for a privacy-focused company.
------------------------------------------------
❓ Who owns NordVPN?
------------------------------------------------
That would be NordSecurity, a seasoned security company with a bunch of cybersecurity apps to their name. Besides developing all these apps, NordSecurity has recently merged with Surfshark - causing quite a bit of controversy. But unlike the situation with ExpressVPN, where the entire operation was purchased by a company with a less-than-ideal reputation, the NordVPN-Surfshark merger didn’t end up making these VPNs less transparent. It did, however, lead to Surfshark getting an independent no-logs VPN audit, similar to NordVPN.
------------------------------------------------
🔍Independent privacy audits
------------------------------------------------
In 2018, PwC figured out “is NordVPN private enough?”, through a No-logs policy audit, concluding that this policy was fair and accurate.
In 2019, VerSprite completed an app security audit, targeting all the apps NordVPN provides. This audit has revealed a couple of security issues that were promptly patched.
In 2021, NordVPN’s Android app received ioXt certification, confirming its high-security standards.
The latest 2023 NordVPN privacy review by Deloitte has verified NordVPN’s no-logs policy once again.
All those audits weren’t really necessary: there are VPNs that operate without ever going through an audit. However, I consider these audits to be a telltale sign of deep security dedication, uncommon for many providers.
------------------------------------------------
🔏NordVPN encryption:
------------------------------------------------
So you might trust NordVPN on the privacy level, but what about the app itself? Does it do the job well? Encryption is a big part of how NordVPN keeps you secure online: it protects your connection and prevents third-party access to your data.
With NordVPN, I can choose between AES-256 and ChaCha20 encryption protocols. Predicting your question: Both are good. First is the golden standard, and second is a modern replacement with more opportunities for improvement.
