My Amputation Story!

Fourteen years of pain and failed ankle surgeries brought me to 2018, when I made the difficult decision to become a twenty-seven-year-old below-the-knee elective amputee. This channel has documented my journey adjusting to life with a visible disability as an amputee, and continues to be a haven to discuss physical and mental health!

There is a brand of pedals/cleats that use magnets instead of the typical snap in place cleat. These can help keep your foot on the pedal if you have trouble with it slipping off.

So above knee amputation, been on the fitness bike at my Physio, I thought new bike 😀😀 got one, and wobbled a bit, then fell off, the result, broken ribs ! Not going to let it defeat me, but I am so glad you up loaded this thank you 👍

For your fantom pain you can get a big mirror the length of you good leg you can put it in between your legs point it to your good leg It will make it look like it your leg is back it will trick your brain and the pain will go away at least it works for me you should try it

Yes, you might also want to have considerable toe-in on your prosthesis to prevent your heel striking the bicycle frame. HOWEVER! Don’t make the mistake that I did, cycling into work and then wearing my cycling leg all day. It got VERY uncomfortable after a few hours and I could feel a pressure sore developing.
I use toe-straps rather than cleated cycling shoes. I have tried both and found that it is much easier to get my leg out of toe straps in an emergency (such as chain wrapping itself around the derailleur while riding uphill, resulting in an instant stop!) rather than having to twist out of cleats.
Remember, the secret with cycling is to keep the rubber side down!

I use such an Socket with pin since the beginning at it is so much more practical for me than without one.

Have you ever thought of using toe cages or pedal straps to help with foot retention? I wonder if they would have a negative impact on how your prosthetic leg feels while you ride. 🤔
