If any of you were smart enough to watch this from the original source, you'd see that Peter Jackson, producer of LOTR, asked Ed to write this song for the CREDITS. Ed flew to New Zealand overnight, watched the movie, and wrote this song conveying his emotional response to the film that very night. He even went out on a whim and played the violin even though he never had before. So before you go running your pretentious mouths about how this song doesn't fit the "world" of LOTR, consider the dedication and emotion put into a song that was made for the ending credits of a great film.

Man so nice this is what music should be about... This has to be in movie first to even be heard so sad.

Desolation of Smaug was a great film and the end was sweet like honey. Great song, really moving. We need more artist like Ed. Here we come 2014.

This strikes me as being a particularly emotional song; it does a really good job at personifying the horror and trauma that a person might have gone through after Smaug's attack (heck, after ANY attack).

how could anyone dislike this song? This is the most epic song. Love me some Lord Of The Rings.

this song fits the story perfectly. if any of you have read the books (i've read them at least a dozen times, just finished them again a couple of weeks ago) you would know that the dwarves all played some kind of musical instrument; pipes, drums, violins, thorin himself played a golden harp. any music they played would have an "acoustic" sound to it. i wasn't sure about it the first time i heard it, but i have listened to it many times since and it is one awesome song by a very talented artist.

It fits Thorin, and it would be a perfect song to for his personal theme.

God bless this kid, he has talent coming out of the woodworks.

I'd love to point out that Ed has seen the movie, while we haven't. Just keep that in mind when saying 'it doesn't fit'. Either way, it is still a beautiful song written by an amazing artist for an amazing movie directed by an amazing director. <3

I love the song... But I agree with everyone. What happened to the powerful classical pieces that we all loved? I really don't think I want this song representing one of the best movies ever created!

Guys...it plays during the credits like all the other lyrical songs from lotr so it should be fine you don't even have to listen to it if you don't think it fits just go once its finished

At the cinema, biggest screen, 3D, after Bilbo said: "What have we done?" Boom... I started to say "no, no, no" because I really didn't want the movie to end but it did. And the credits and this song came up and I was stunned. Completly amazing!

I am a person who really likes watching credits and there are a lot of credits songs that really get to me. Now, I obviously haven't seen "The Desolation of Smaug" yet but this song promises to be one of them. Just from having read the book it seems very relevant.

I think it's perfectly suitable to the Hobbit. Although not to the Lord of the Rings. Lord of the rings is epic masterpiece while Hobbit is much more a tale which is told by the fire. And also IN the Hobbit there is lot of singing.
