The Newfoundland Road Trip That Pushed Me To The Limit

Newfoundland is one of the most spectacular islands in the world, and I've got the footage to prove it. Just be sure to bring a warm jacket.

Amanda and I embark on a doomed road trip to 'The Rock' to photograph seascapes, icebergs, and maritime culture. To call it 'mind-blowing' is an understatement, but it comes with challenges.

The adventure begins with an overnight ferry ride across the sea, and we luxuriate in our 2-star berth. Things go downhill when Amanda finds out we're in separate beds.

Our first day broke the camper twice, and if it hadn't been for the kindness of strangers, our trip would have finished before it started.

Despite the challenges, we head to Bottle Cove to capture some seascapes, but Mother Nature has other ideas. Even though the occasional polar bear lands on the Island, I'm more scared of the moose, and plenty roam the forest I'm hiking in.

We bump into a fan at the first gas station, and he wants a selfie but not with me. How rude!
I also share the best way to find lost images among your many terabytes of landscape photography storage.

Will Amanda give me some personal space, and dare I show you my crappy test shots from my phone? What do I do when the stairs fall off the back of the camper, and what's my face like?

There's really only one way to find out.

A Canadian soldier challenged me to visit his homeland, Newfoundland. I took him up on it. Walked into his parent's house, where in the kitchen sat his old man, and his mom, and that young officer. His father was in WW2. Artillery man. Showed me all his medals. Two brown bottles sat on the table and when I sat down his father uncorked both bottles of rum. Home brewed rum mind you, and we had to cut it with water 50/50 (on advice of the son). I don't remember most of the rest of the trip but I came away with a deep respect for the land, and the people of Newfoundland. Fell in love with the place. My liver, not so much.

As a Newfoundlander, we were raised to love another as we would want to be treated and we were taught the value of helping our neighbors and if we continue to do that we would always hold what we value most and that is our respect. We learned to laugh at ourselves before we can laugh at others. I am proud of where I came from and it served me well as I lived in other provinces when I left home to find work and always carried my values with me. I would never walk into a store without holding the door for the ones behind me. I am back home after getting married and wanting to come home to give them the comfort of going to bed and walking the trails and having the feeling of being safe and secured. Thank you for this video. I love this rock and that is where I will live the rest of my life like so many others who have left, but came home for the love and the beauty of what so many takes for granted.

I lived in Newfoundland (a Brit) for nine years, 2003-2012, and loved every minute of it. It is one of the most unspoilt and naturally beautiful places I have ever been. The people are the friendliest I have ever met, and are so caring and helpful to ‘come-from-always’ .
Glad you got to visit and photograph Newfoundland, Gavin. What a place. 👍

Another great video Gavin. I’m the fan you and Amanda met at the Irving gas station in Corner Brook. My wife and I had a good laugh at the skit. We hope you had a good time in Newfoundland and come back again.

"I don’t why it’s not another country."
We know why, but the heart breaks in the telling of that story.

I love when tourists visit our province and showcase the beauty. Sometimes it takes videos like this to reminds us what’s all around us. Thanks

So many youtubers out there let their success go to their heads and get a bit snobish. The fact that you two can run into fans and put them on camera for some fun speaks volumes of how good of people you are. Looking forward to the rest of this adventure.

I just came across your video, and I'm in awe of the things you were able to capture. It's not just because I've been living here most my life, it's just some days I forget for a moment, how fortunate I am to live on such a beautiful island on earth. Thank you both for your kindness, and stunning imagery. You are forever welcome here, I hope the rock is kind to you both, cheers! 🍻❤

Yes we do have bears in Newfoundland. Mostly brown bears. Even the moose is not native to the island. It was brought in years ago. Yes, we do get polar bears at the odd time. Don't plan your trip on seeing one. They are rare sightings. If you wanted to see larger mountains Gros Morne was the place to go just North of Deer Lake heading up the Northern Peninsula. Less than an hours drive North. Just a bit more than half an hour before Corner Brook heading west.

We love our island! We only joined Canada in 1949. prior to that we were a British dominion. Our island has deep roots to the English, Irish, Scottish and French as well as multiple Indigenous groups that all play a hand in our history, our many dialects and our modern day culture! The rugged coastline is always photo/video worthy.

Bottle Cove is the best place to go for sunsets and boil ups (campfires with a pot of water and seafood) on the beach. The small trees in Bottle Cover are known as tuckamore trees. You took the trail in Bottle Cove called "Trails End", if you had have continued to the right and not the left, you would have come across some of the most beautiful scenery!

That was certainly Moose poop, but they are more inclined to avoid you than attack you.

There are many reasons why our roads are terrible, the main reasons are simply the geography and climate.

You went from Bottle Cove on the eest coast to Chance Cove at the beginning of the Avalon Peninsula and didn't share any footage of the trip across the island? Did you make it up to Gros Morne? I would love to know more about your journey here. If you ever come back this way, message me on here or look for my socials and reach out to me, I'd love to take you both on a complementary guided tour of the west coast from Port aux Basques up to L'anse aux Meadows, a fun 3 day trip which will include visiting 2 UNESCO sites and a trip back in time to the days of the Mi'kmaq and Beothuk first peoples of the Island! I'll also get you "Screeched In" and make you both honorary Newfoundlanders!

I've been waiting for you to visit my home province! I'm currently living in Australia and I miss 'home' so much...fog, potholes, wind and all! I am a hobbyist photographer and really enjoy your videos, and love your humor, and Amanda's as well. Keep up the fantastic work.

Your wife eating her breakfast is something I would do for a laugh if my husband was taking a video, so she has got the humor down, lol
