Just got Adam's Apple (2 months after this video) and you're so right. It is such a pleasant surprise to me, who also had not heard one note of it. It's awesome. Your reaction in this vid definitely got my attention. I'm beyond stoked that I pulled the trigger and bought it. The sound is sublime, the music is very accessible and both are skillfully rendered.

dank.

Thank you for the very nice report of your impressions - yours match with mine.
Acoustic Sounds 'We Get Requests' was a must for me, and it is no disappointment. SQ for me is a 8.5/10 (what is excellent!)
Unity was new to me, so I first listed to the digital version on Qobuz, before I decided to skip the vinyl.
On 'Adam's Apple' I had high expectations after listening to the digital version. I can only agree with you: It is amazing!!!

Adding the album titles is a helpful touch. Nice summary.

I absolutely love UNITY. Probably in my top 3 or 4 Jazz records. Great video as always Scott !

Enjoyed the video Scott. By the way, you have one of the best backgrounds of anyone doing record videos. The greenery is nicer than seeing the usual contrived spines of records in the background. I like good organ jazz too, as should most audiophiles, as the enormous air volume of the organ is a real audiophile delight if your system sounds airy and expansive; which it should. Some other great Jazz guys who made some great organ/ensemble recordings are Dr. Lonnie Smith, whose best known album is called Spiral. And there's another guy, whose name is almost identical, who is also a great Jazz organist: Lonnie Liston Smith. Some unique artists just have such a distinctive sound, that you just know its them within a a few seconds. Lonnie Liston Smith is one of those artists. His music is so relaxing, yet never boring and he uses little percussion instruments for effect throughout most of his music. His music is really interesting, and if anyone ever can be said to have their own sound, it's him.

Speaking before of air volume. I had lived in places that have an 8 foot ceiling, a 9 foot ceiling and I think a 10 foot ceiling. The image height and overall sense of limitless expansion is always better with higher ceilings. If you've been living and playing your stereo somewhere that has 10 foot ceilings, it is a real major let down sonically, moving to someplace with an 8 foot ceiling.

I just made an lp LOT find with still sealed blues records on old labels like Yazoo. Not my cup of tea to listen to usually, but finding old rare records is one thing, but finding them still sealed is really surprising.

I got a mid-70s pressing of Adam's Apple a couple months ago that sounds excellent. It's definitely my favorite album from Wayne Shorter, it's the only one of his records I've heard where he goes for a more full tone on his sax for pretty much the whole record. To my ears he usually leans more into a pitchy sound I'm not always in the mood for (maybe that's what they call "multiphonics"). Herbie Hancock is great on it too, I really love when he's a sideman

I really like all three. I have the 45 of Regrets and it sounds phenomenal. Never heard Unity before the Classics reissue but loving it right on first listen. Agree with you, I pick up everything with Grant Green. Enjoyed the video.

We Get Requests was the 3rd or 4th jazz album I ever purchased. I was still getting into jazz at the time. It definitely contributed to my journey into loving jazz. I haven’t listened to it in a while. Time to break it out again. I haven’t heard the other titles but I’m going to give them a stream to see if they are albums I will buy.

For those who like their Jazz infected ( in a good way) with keyboards. You should check out some old 1970s/80s Jazz Fusion albums by David Sancious. You've heard him before. He was on many Bruce Springsteen albums; remember the ending of Rosalita? He was Springsteen's keyboardist, his early stuff and then some of his later albums. He formed his own band David Sancious & Tone. I like Transformation and Just As I thought. I didn't warm to The Bridge & Forest Of Feelings on first listen, but they will get more chances. He's an amazing keyboard player and very well recorded with often amazing dynamics . He has a fairly lengthy Discography. Tomorrow I'll talk about another great Fusion keyboardist.

I think you will love Gene Ammons AP series, if you can still get them, that's what got me into Jazz, now I am really enjoying whole lot of other Jazz Musicians, and I have been listening to Jazz everyday for 2.5 years now,

You might want to try the Chet Baker reissues on Sam or Craft. Also, Impex and Pure Pleasure do some nice AAA reissues. Bill Evans Trio 64 and Trio 65 are also very good in the Acoustic Sounds series. The OJC (Original Jazz Classics) series from Fantasy was AAA until about 15 years ago - in the 80s/90s, they pressed hundreds of Prestige, Riverside, Galaxy, and Contemporary titles that can still be found at reasonable;e prices and they sound outstanding.

Scott. Great take on these records. I completely relate to your position on jazz and agree it takes some listening to get into the “experimental “ stuff. I too like the easier listening releases and go to those releases more often when listening. I will pick up Adam’s Apple knowing you got into it immediately. Thanks

Great video, always entertaining. I was surprised to hear you say this was your first Wayne Shorter, did you not pick up the blue note classic “Speak No Evil”? I really recommend getting Wayne Shorter’s first album on Blue Note “Night Dreamer” you can pick up a BN75 (mastered by Bernie Grundman)of that which sounds excellent and super cheap.

Yep.
Nicely done for a quasi-jazz neophyte…
Adams Apple, The Soothsayer, Speak No Evil, Ju-Ju, Night Dreamer, all superlative stuff from Shorter!!
And whoever said ‘We Get Requests’ is on the edge of dinner/lounge jazz knows his stuff! Petersons other more straight-bop stuff on Verve and Mercury is better to me.
Thus endeth the lesson.

If you like that Wayne Shorter, you might also like his tone poet ETC.
It’s the closest musically from his catalog (even though Adam’s Apple is the most upbeat).

You got those blue note albums right away, my delivery estimate is not until next week. Did you pay extra for faster shipping?

Hi. I've been listening to unity recently. Again I have to agree with you. It's really noisy. The horns drown out the organ. I miss the laid back vibe of into somethin. It's missing Grant Green. Maybe I'll warm to it eventually. I really like wayne shorter. I've not heard Adams apple yet I've just picked it up. I have listened to speak no evil, schizophrenia and etcetera. Etcetera is amazing. I loved it on first listen. Interesting compositions. Lots going on but doesn't sound thrown together. It doesn't sound like it's improvised. It just sounds right. Anything with herbie hancock on you know it's going to be good.

I hope that you don't mind, but I wanted to post this supremely hilarious video title/link here. It is honestly THE funniest video I've seen concerning the Mobile Fidelity 'Scandal' If for some reason you do not appreciate my doing this, please accept my humble apology in advance. There is nothing in the actual content that would offend anyone, with the exception of some strong language used in some of the subtitles. It is a clip taken from some movie about Hitler. Otherwise, it is just a good natured and I think extremely funny take on the MOFI situation. Here is the title in case I will not be allowed to post a link here: "MOFI: the Downfall of Mobile Fidelity - Hitler Reacts"

I really think you and others will find this very funny. There are some GREAT references to Fremer and Guttenberg. I'll see if I can post the link in a reply to this post in case it is automatically removed. I REALLY hope you like it! 😊
