I Tried EUC with No Experience…

Learning to ride an Electric Unicycle aka EUC for the first time!

EUC's are very similar to freeskates in some ways, but they also have some major differences. In this video, Gabe and Jeff provide a freeskater's unique perspective of what it's like to EUC with zero experience.

After 8 years of riding EUC i can finally give something back to you for all the help you have given me in videos.
The best way I've found to teach people is smooth pavement against a long flat wall that is high enough that you can not reach the top of it. Use only 1 hand(the hand that is closest to the wall) to steady yourself by touching the wall as you travel forward. Using 2 hands will always turn the wheel into the wall and this is not what you want. A high flat wall will force you to keep your balance on the wheel only. If you can grab onto or lean over something (eg. low walls or people or fences) that will be the default place you shift your weight when you start to loose balance and panic. That response slows down your learning.
Hope this helps.
Also valiant first attempt man. Great work.

After many falls, euc riding tutorials attempting to learn how to ride my new inmotion v14 I've stumbled across this video which offered something NONE of the other instructional videos I've seen offered ~ and that is how to sensibly counter balance and how to turn. It was explained here that when your balance is off causing you to fall (for example) towards the left and now the wheel is forced to lean left (following the imbalance) you "twist" the wheel into the same direction of the lean to straighten yourself upright. And when you have balance and want to make a turn ~ You lean in the preferred direction and then twist the EUC to come out of the turn. This information may be intuitive for many riders but I really needed to see and here these instructional sets. Thank You

Six months ago I couldn't even make it 20 feet across my backyard. Today I can do super tight angles and figure eights and jump up the curb and down a curb and now I am beginning to do circles in reverse. It is the funnest damn thing I have ever had in my life! It is like your own personal Jetpack.

Man I love watching people learn to ride an EUC. It's def challenging at first! One thing that I think is a good thing to master early on (which you are getting well towards the end) is the dismount and catching of the wheel. Building confidence in dismounting so you know that at any time you can hop off and catch the wheel goes a long way towards encouraging you to be more confident, to play, to practice mounting without holding onto anything, and to committing to rolling just a few more feet after you first feel a wobble. After that, it's just building the muscle memory for a whole new strange way of moving. I hope you keep up with your lessons, I'd love to see a progress update after a week of trying. Just because EUCs are fun as hell once you learn to ride, and such a unique and practical mode of transportation.

I seriously believe that our body learns what our mind tries to learn while we sleep. Sometimes you try and try something new and then you give up and the next day it's always easier. :D

So awesome to have an experienced rider to teach you. That's what makes the Thursday freeskate lessons so great!

Impressed he could learn on grass. Absolute hardest way to learn. Far easier on pavement. Just have a bare wheel with no accessories, and allow it to get a little beat up.

Likewise holding the friend's hand. Hardest way to learn. Just let go. Wheels are meant to crash over and over while you're learning. Embrace it.

I remember my first time learning, it was tiring and frustrating. My feet and calves were hurting like no other, but after about a week it clicked. Took me a few months though until I would say I'm pretty comfortable on it, an almost natural feeling. One tip to learn on the pavement, use a string or rope. Tie it on the top of the EUC, so that way you can catch it if you fall off, this way you won't damage the wheel. That's what I did, there was no scratches on my shell.

Regarding the twisting for balance, it probably would have helped to ride a bicycle at very slow speed, where the front tire has to be constantly steered for balance. An EUC hast to be twisted similar to steering the front tire on a bicycle, but to twist on a an EUC for a beginner, extend arms, and flail arms left to twist EUC right and vice versa. I spent about 15 minutes doing beginner drills, using a screened fence, for support to mount, rock back and forth, and do short runs along the fence. Then I ventured away from the fence and was able to lap and then laps around a tennis court on my first attempt, using twisting for constant balance correction at 3 to 5 mph on a V8F. I then moved to a long outdoor parking lot and discovered that at around 8 mph, my V8F became self balancing, I no longer had to make balance corrections, and could essentially stand still while riding in a straight line at 8 mph or so. I didn't just suddenly learn to ride, I was just going fast enough for my V8F to become stable. It was at this point that I learned to steer by tilting the EUC, small tilts at first, then some weaving patterns, and then large radius turns. Learning to turn well took longer, because a rider has to tilt the EUC to steer, and lean for balance, and it takes time to learn how to do this depending on turning radius and speed. I used support to mount and launch for my first four 30 minute sessions, then did free mount (no support) on the fifth session, which wasn't an issue since I could basically ride at that time. I was 69 years old when I started back in August 2021 (old guy).

I was expecting this to be someone saying they learned in 30 minutes and that it was "easy". Glad this one was a mere mortal like myself. It took me a lot of practice and much falling to learn to ride the EUC.

As someone that learned EUC first and is now trying to learn freeskating it was very refreshing to see you go through the baby deer phase of learning EUC. This channels videos that include EUCs is actually what turned me on to freeskates in the first place so it is a great idea to include things other than freeskating on the channel.

Keep it up! It's the same as learning to ride a bike. Once learned, it become your body extention. Keep your knees relaxed and use only them to balance yourself + do not be affraid to lean a bit more foward (more momentum = less side falls and less knees efforts).

when you learn stuff like this just prepare to fail, take off your backpack, empty your pockets, and just give it a go. if you fall off you learn faster. who cares if people watch and laugh? they probably wont even be laughing but admire your courage. go ham!

You did great, took me weeks, I was about to give up, and just flagged down another EUC rider on the street to ask for tips, and they offered to teach me - I was really close, and just needed a couple of pointers to get out of the pit of dispair .... keep at it. A good nights sleep causes your subconscious to start to learn the muscle memory, so just trying again another day can help with progress too. Also, that was a pretty big wheel with power pads on, which is a more expert level wheel, a stock smaller wheel can be a better place to start - but - you can learn anything if you persist!

Stick with it, EUCs are awesome once you have learned, fast, long range, handles potholes, can go off road, but compact and can come inside stores, apartments, so are harder to steal than a bike for instance.

I ride an EUC and I just ordered my first set of JMKs. So stoked to try them. Wish me luck!

Good attempt, and good video. Keep at it, if you haven't done so. Good tips. Another tip is to push yourself from a pole repeatively in a parking lot, baseball court or whatever and get use to the feeling of leaning back to stop, and leaning a bit forward to gain speed. When slowing down, land your feet off to the side, not in front . Once you nail the start and stop, then focus on mounting the EUC with one leg and repeat the steps above but without a pole. Figure 8's is also good for learning turning. Best of luck, you got this

Hello Gabe ! Good job ! Riding freeskates is way more difficult than EUC ... I've been a wheeler for 6 years ... and freeskater for 6 days :) You'll be a good wheeler very soon ! I'm not sure yet that I'll be a good freeskater :D

I've noticed that holding the euc from behind helps new riders learn more quickly.
