For many years, Gareth Southgate was criticized for his team selection decisions with England picking players who were out of form not playing well over players who deserve to be in the squad. There was a feeling that there was some bias and favoritism towards certain players and fans wanted him to be a little more ruthless in his selection. Their squad for the EUROs is much different from their previous ones because Southgate has made some changes as he’s not relying on players who did well for him in the past as he dropped the likes of Jack Grealish Marcus Rashford Raheem Sterling who have international experience and have done well for him previously and others for guys like Jarrod Bowen Cole Palmer Anthony Gordon Ollie Watkins etc who are in better form and has less international experience than them. Sterling was their best player when they made it to the finals at the last EUROs and he can no longer make their squad. This hasn’t gone well with fans and pundits and leaving out Rashford and Grealish was a surprise to everyone.

Grealish was brilliant for them at the last EUROs when he came off the bench and was an impact sub and a lot of people expected him to make the squad for them this time around, he didn’t have a great season at Manchester City as he spent as much time on the bench than on the field. The game isn’t about goals and assists every time and you shouldn’t judge a player’s ability solely off of numbers, he had 3 goals and 3 assists while playing for the most stacked team in the premier league and he cost over 100 million, look at the players who was picked ahead of him, on far weaker teams they had more goal contributions than him. His omission was confusing to many people as they believe that Southgate made a mistake in leaving him at home, only time will tell if that’s the right decision and it’s the same thing with Rashford as bad of a season he had at club level, he has been pretty good in an England shirt. It’s clear that he cares about winning now as he picked players who went into this tournament in great form rather than ones who he relied on in the past and that’s a good thing for them going forward.

Erling Haaland- Manchester City and Martin Odegaard- Arsenal have been lighting up the Premier League in the last 12-18 months and they’re both phenomenal players and Norway’s attack in general look good on paper, but they haven’t qualified for an international tournament and they’re both going into their prime. It’s unfortunate that neither of them are going to the EUROs this summer since their country didn’t qualify. It doesn’t change the fact that they’re world class players don’t get me wrong, players of that caliber no matter how poor their national team is you want to see them at a major tournament. The likes of Gareth Bale and Robert Lewandowski were carrying the likes of Wales and Poland on their backs for so many years and they qualified for multiple different tournaments, same thing with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for Georgia even Jan Oblak with Slovenia as well is finally representing his country at an international tournament. Norway’s firepower in attack alone should be enough to qualify for the next major tournament.

Kind of understandable but there are some non Bayern players who should have been selected like Brandt or Reus instead of Muller or Choosing Neur as first choice over Ter Stegen. I love Neur and Muller but their time coming to an end and are not the same as they were before.

Mats Hummels is one of the best CBs in the world right now and is the main reason why Borussia Dortmund played in a Champions League final for the first time since 2012-13 and he is worthy of a Ballon Dor nominee, but that wasn’t enough to impress Julian Nagelsmann as he dropped him from the Germany squad for the EUROs. A lot of people are surprised that he wasn’t in the squad due to his performances on the champions league and it’s true that their defense would’ve benefited from his presence in the team, he had different reasons for not selecting him. He was told that he was going to be a bit part player at the EUROs as Nagelsmann prefers Antonio Rudiger and Jonathan Tah over him and that didn’t go well with him as he didn’t want to have a reduced role and these are things that go on behind the scenes that none of us know. If Germany doesn’t win the EUROs, he’ll get blamed for not picking him in the first place.

It’s unfortunate that one of the most exciting players in the world won’t be at the EUROs this summer. At the age of 19, Gavi was making a mark already for club and country, but has missed the last 6 months due to an ACL injury and he was ruled out of the tournament months ago. Even if there was any signs that he would return to fitness by the time this tournament starts, you never believed he had a chance of being part of the squad as they wouldn’t want to take any risks on him. Spain have some responsibility to take on him missing the EUROs because they already qualified for the tournament and instead of properly resting him against Georgia he started and got injured and while that could’ve happened to anybody, still if they didn’t play him in that game, he would’ve been at the EUROs by now and these guys haven’t helped themselves by their poor handling and mismanagement when it comes to the workload of Barcelona youngsters. He’s still only 19 years old and it was a setback that he missed out on the EUROs, Gavi is going to be around for the next decade or so and if he replicates the form he showed before his injury and even if he doesn’t, he’s gonna have many more major tournaments to play in for Spain.

Reece James is one of the best fullbacks in the world, but the guy just can’t stay healthy at all. Due to his struggles with injuries he has now missed out on back to back major tournaments with England: World Cup 2022, EUROs 2024. To be honest, I never really expected him to make the cut for the EUROs simply because last season he missed so many games with once again he barely played and even though he came back before the season ended, he wasn’t anywhere close to match fitness since he hadn’t played for so long. Not to mention that he got a red card Given the fact that England have a lot of quality at right back they won’t take 5 RBs at the EUROs especially not a guy who hasn’t been fit in the last 18 months and he hasn’t played 3 full games for Chelsea in what 2-3 years something like that. He is a talented player and he should be part of the England squad in future tournaments as he’s capable of doing so, it depends on his fitness and how healthy he is because nowadays in a season you don’t know how many games he’ll play.
