Textile Fibers Lecture - Linen/Flax fiber

Linen is a flax-based textile that is predominantly used for homeware applications. While linen is similar to cotton, it is made from fibers derived from the stems of the flax plant instead of the bolls that grow around cotton seeds. Garments made of linen are desirable in hot and humid climates.

What are the different types of linen fabric?
Damask linen: the most delicate variety which is similar to embroidery.
Plain-woven linen: a hardier variety often used in towels and dish towels.
Loosely woven linen: an absorbent but less durable option used for napkins.

Uses of linen types of fabric include:
Bedding including sheets and duvet covers.
Tablecloths and table runners.
Napkins.
Handkerchiefs.
Dish Towels (Tea Towels)
Clothing and suits.
Bags and Purses.
Shoes.

Properties of linen
Linen fabric feels cool; it is also breathable and is stronger and more lustrous than cotton. The more it is washed, the softer it gets.

What is the main disadvantage of linen?

Crinkly: linen fabric gets wrinkled very quickly. However, it's becoming more and more common to wear linen clothing just like that instead of ironing it all the time or obsessing over it; Bleaching and dying: when linen fabric is bleached or dyed, it can lose its biodegradable properties.
