I feel like the bass and chug pedal combo is the key to finally discovering the mythical "brown note."

I know it sounds counterintuitive, but generally on bass you don't want a lot of lo frequency gain. Distorting just the overtones gives you a heavy enough distortion and it retains the clarity of the low frequencies. Gives you the perfect balance of super heavy distortion and a beefy low end.

Turning down the LF gain and blending with a DI would make for a monstrous bass tone.

That bass tone is venturing into the land of Monty Colvin from Galactic Cowboys, and Doug Pinnick from King's X and KXM. Doug's is the most monstrous tone I have ever heard live.

just saying, Chug Pedal Bass Version, you just have to add a blend knob so you can mix the original bass sound and the dirty sound and it would be perfect
