Wildfires erupt on Greek island of Kos | BBC News

Greek firefighters are tackling blazes on the island of Kos for a second day.

Tourists and locals were forced to evacuate after the fires began.

Wildfires are common in Greece, but hotter and drier weather linked with the effects of climate change has increased their frequency and intensity.

We went to Kos June this year & last year. This year was so much hotter than what it normally is.
We where evacuated from Kardamena, we where just told we where being evacuated & moved by coach to by the airport. Can't fault the police, firefighters, army, volunteers & coach drivers who looked after us throughout the night, there the true heroes 💙

I was in kos when this happened, eveeyone got evacuated it was so scary! - me and my family was dumped in a place where we didn’t know where we were! - luckily some locals asked if we wanted to go to a hotel and sleep in the lobby, next day we were back at our hotel! Thank YOU ALL FIREFIGHTERS!! ❤❤❤

I was there in kos, evacuated from the portobello royal and dumped in a random car park with a cafe, luckily the firefighters put out the fire! Thank god this was so scary! ❤

I was there, evacuated from the Portobello Royal hotel on my last night of my 1 week holiday. Planned a trip to the town of Kos, sharing the same name of the island, before this kicked off.

Just back from Kos last week and must admit it was the hottest I have felt it there, been going for over 10 years now. Could only manage a few hours sunbathing the rest was in the shade. Hope everyone is okay.

Arson as always. Yes the heat helps but as journalists please do your job. No climate politics will save us from these fires, the arsonists need to be caught and punished to the maximum and their cases need to be made public.
