Things are getting so much better. I hope in a few years I will have a camera like this with built in ND, 32 bit float audio and the option to use a shotgun and wireless mic at the same time for backup audio.

In this day and age you don't have to use your primary phone for this rig. You could totally buy an inexpensive Android and do this. Some would argue quality issues, sure, but to me it seems dumb to use a primary phone for this for the sake of, well what happens if you get a call or text in the middle of filming and you forgot to put it in Airplane mode or whatever. But it I would say another disadvantage to the phone monitor method is likely getting critical focus manually. Monitors tend to be better at the clarity needed to get that. But from backpacking perspective, this is an awesome way to go.

Great video. I’ve tried every other monitor on the market and nothing is as good as an iPhone with Monitor+ (with the paid features). I’m almost considering buying another iPhone and using it strictly as a dedicated monitor.

Also, there was a time where I actually used the mounted iPhone as a second angle while shooting… it worked great!

I’m using my phone as a monitor to in my rig and for handling the overheating I use one a wireless charger that’s has a peltier inside to cool the phone. If someone needs it you can looked up as gaming phone cooler and you will find the options 🤓

I tried this exact set up with Sony A1/ZV-E1 and some anamorphic lenses too, with iPhone and Monitor+ app, and USBC cable. I agree the phone setup makes everything compact as you wouldn't need to attach bulky NPF battery, like you would with external monitor. Variable desqueeze and other features in the app were awesome too. The only limitation I found was that the Sony MTP protocol that runs thru the cable and the Monitor+ app maxes out at 1024p (or was it 768p) which makes it hard for me to achieve critical focus with manual anamorphic lenses, as the video feed shown on your phone isnt as sharp. I ended going back to my 7inch HDMI external monitors as that gets me much more refined detailed to achieve accurate focus.

If you have any android, the monitor and control app is amazing and free! You also don't need a cable to connect the phone and camera. It's very little delay as well.

That Stalman clamp seems pretty handy. Gotta get myself one!

To minimize your setup further - use a MagSafe mount! Sirui makes a MagSafe mount that has 1/4 20 and locating pin holes on it - perfect to pop your phone on and off and doesn’t have to be the 15 Pro for the stahlman mount.

And arguably even more low profile.

Chris i use the exact same rig. My issue is the camera charges itself with the iPhone and drains it so fast. Any way around this?

Wow, what timing. I'm traveling to Greece next week and was debating on bringing my Ninja or not. Going to give this a try!

Hey Chris, great video as always.
This has been my go-to monitor set-up since your monitor + video. Ive even done this with my ZV-1.

I have a setup very similar which is a Ulanzi/Falcam foldable half cage on my A7RV. The reason I like it compared to other cages is that it also has the rail further away from the shoe mount enabling me to use the DJI adapter. I then use the Magsafe foldable F38 mount for my IPhone and couldn't be happier. What I do like about yours is that the phone can be lower/closer than my MagSafe mount, so very tempting !! :) excellent Video and I want one of those/all of those Blazar lenses, just can't justify it at the moment .. I see them on four of my favourite channels including yours regularly .. it's like a CONSTANT reminder/temptation ;) thanks Chris as always.

I’m definitely going to use this set up on my FX 30. I tried hooking my ninja V5, but it’s so heavy and bulky and frustrating because I can’t get any camera control except for recording.

thats great. i love using my phone as a monitor too. I'm just trying to find a way to also have room to mount my rode video mic on the camera at the same time :/

Instead of using the kondor blue mount you could use a mag safe mount..still strong to hold the iphone but lighter and easier to attach and detach your iPhone. I use my iPhone as monitor and the biggest problem remains the overheating which occurs after 10/15 minutes under the sun...

I do this with my a7iii. This is neat if you are willing to use a dummy battery for power and frees up the hdmi for wireless video. 2 video outputs, boom.

Also works with my fx30
