Mike Erre joins Phil and Skye to discuss how to survive the holidays. What’s the best way to engage (or disengage) a contentious relative who wants to argue about politics, and how do we remain united as churches and families in these divided times? Professor, author, and preacher Tony Campolo died last week. Shane Claiborne returns to discuss his friendship with Campolo and his legacy of challenging the American church with the “red letters” of the Bible. Also this week—what’s the real goal behind protecting public nativity displays, and disappointed political witches.

When Mike Erre said the thing about acknowledging I’m the biggest sinner in this room, at first it felt facetious. But then in reflection I suddenly got something about the beam/log in the eye. It’d never made sense before - like the person with the biggest sin has to clean up first to help the person with the little sin?

A recent search through the Bible convinced me that though we sometimes become fixated on what is right, and it’s certainly useful when we figure out the right way to do something, it’s not our objective. Throughout the Bible, rightness seems to be valuable only to the degree in which it helps people to love God and to the degree in which it helps develop a healthy community that cares for one another.

So now it clicked for me that the beam in the eye is something that’s blocking Love. It’s not that we can’t help each other with getting things right, but we can’t do it till we have a right outlook of love, so first we gotta deal with whatever’s blocking the love - and for myself, I know that it’s not the thing I see going on with my brother. It’s my idea of myself as separate from God. I need to get centered again.

A great hymn hidden in the Old Testament is "His Mercy Endures Forever" - whenever it's referenced only a few lines are given. So you have to put it together yourself. It reminds us that we don't trust God's promises but in his actions and that he'll do again what he has already done. Zechariah was made a mute, not because he questioned God, but because he doubted God could do for him what God had done for Abraham. Abraham said the same thing Zechariah said and wasn't made a mute because it was a new thing.

For His Mercy Endures Forever
It came to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord;
and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the Lord, saying,
For he is good; for his mercy endures forever. And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory
of the Lord upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and
praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endures forever.
Let Israel now say, that his mercy endures forever.
Let the house of Aaron now say, that his mercy endures forever.
Let them now that fear the Lord say, that his mercy endures forever.
For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endures to all generations.
Praise ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endures forever.
O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good; for his mercy endures forever.
O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endures forever.
O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endures forever.
To him who alone does great wonders: for his mercy endures forever.
To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endures forever.
To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endures forever.
To him that made great lights: for his mercy endures forever:
The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endures forever:
The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endures forever.
To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn: for his mercy endures forever:
And brought out Israel from among them: for his mercy endures forever:
With a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm: for his mercy endures forever.
To him which divided the Red sea into parts: for his mercy endures forever:
And made Israel to pass through the midst of it: for his mercy endures forever:
But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea: for his mercy endures forever.
To him which led his people through the wilderness: for his mercy endures forever.
To him which smote great kings: for his mercy endures forever:
And slew famous kings: for his mercy endures forever:
Sihon king of the Amorites: for his mercy endures forever:
And Og the king of Bashan: for his mercy endures forever:
And gave their land for an heritage: for his mercy endures forever:
Even an heritage unto Israel his servant: for his mercy endures forever.
Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endures forever:
And has redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endures forever.
Who gives food to all flesh: for his mercy endures forever.
O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endures forever.
The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that
shall say, Praise the Lord of hosts: for the Lord is good; for his mercy endures forever: and of them that shall bring the
sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord.

One of the tricks has to be that the food on the table is so epic that people are eager to celebrate the feast rather that devolve into chaos. Thanks guys. Very helpful today.

Regarding Trump's spiritual protection, he also seems to be magically shielded from prayers that he would be blessed with a spirit of wisdom, humility, and kindness, so... ehh 🤷.

“He has a magical shield. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s his hair products.”
Y’all that made me laugh so hard!

Campolo became huge in evangelicalism during the late '70s and early '80s. He caught national attention in the '90s and appeared on talk shows because he started hanging out with Bill Clinton. He was already falling from favor with conservative Christians by that point.

Can the powers and principalities not create protection for those who advance their cause?

That Tony Campolo quote is a really good question.

If the Bible is wrong and Jesus of Nazareth is not in fact the Son of God and merely a man with some interesting ideas would I still follow him? Yes. I think I would still call myself a "Jesus-ite" b/c what Christ preached in the New Testament is good.

Regarding the "witch" story: this is very convenient considering the prophetic and very online charismatic communities have been claiming this for years, with no evidence. Reddit is anonymous, just saying. 😂

1) No human has power to curse another.

2) God gives people what they demand. He would warning them and if they refuse he hands them over to their own depraved minds.

1 Samuel‬ ‭8‬:‭19‬-‭20‬
19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. No! They said. We want a king over us.
20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to goout before us and fight our battles.”

I'm completely in support of not hanging around relatives who are toxic.
No one owes anyone anything.
If I feel a relative or 2 will start nonsense (or even if I feel hurt by the way they voted), I will avoid them. And if that means having a smaller get-together with the other relatives I'm willing to tolerate, than so be it.

Life is too short to be putting ourselves in unhappy situations.

OK wait. Someone wants kudos for throwing a birthday party for another human being?

Whether or not you think $ex work should be legal or illegal, is moral or immoral, $ex work is considered the evilest of evil (worse than lying or stealing) in most Christians eyes. Even though it's consenting adults partaking in the transaction, it's worse than bearing false witness and usually even embezzling (even though in them situations, there are numerous non-consenting participants).
Prostitution is definitely deemed worse than philandering and cheating on one's female spouse (a woman cheating on her husband is ALWAYS demonized).
It sickens me. Its clear-cut misogyny.
