For anyone wondering how much water, it’s 1 litre to 1 tablespoon of salt. You might like to add a smidge more or less, but I find that’s a really good, consistent way of ensuring your pasta is neither bland nor too salty.

While the oil ads nothing to the pasta I helps with the surface tension halting the forming of bubbles and preventing boil overs... Or so I've experienced

I'm glad to hear you say not to make the water you're boiling taste like the ocean. Some cooks/chefs seem to like everything killer salty.

I don’t know who told you to sing that bit. Whether it was you or babe … whoever it was deserves to be inducted into the Internet hall of fame.

Oil does have a use when put in pasta. It will stop water from boiling over while cooking. You dont need much of it though

An Italian nonna once taught us to use 1L of water per 100g of pasta and 10g of salt per 1L of water.

I usually use oil just so the pasta doesn't stick to the bottom idk why but it always help prevent stickiness for me

Actually… I discovered a tiny amount of oil (like a drop) will change the surface tension and prevent bubbles from forming and overflowing the pot.

I like to add a lot more salt to the water for most pasta dishes I make. It makes the pasta stick even less and is a good opportunity for seasoning. So I never season whatever sauce I'm making directly. I only ever use the pasta water, save for a few sauces that are very finicky with starch or cook time such as carbonara.

You can tell that is good quality pasta based on its colour. Andy should also mention that.

Putting oil in:
1: Doesn't "prevent it from sticking" - stir it once or twice it won't stick.
2: Waste of oil - if you want oil on the pasta, add oil to the pasta after draining.
3: Can prevent sauces sticking to the pasta properly later (if you even manage to get oil on the pasta in the first place given it mostly floats to the top, see 2)
4: Means you have to wash your pan with detergent instead of just rinsing it out.
