McDonald’s makes over $2.9 million per location yearly; Subway makes less than $500, 000. That means a single McDonald's cashier probably sees more money in a day than a whole Subway does in a week!

Sell me half of the food for double the price, meanwhile one employee is managing the entire place, resulting in triple the wait time. No thanks.

Subway is failing for the same reason almost all fast food places are failing: Overcharging for budget food.

It's probably because a 5 dollar footlong ends up being 13 dollars.

Its not even the loss of the 5$ footlong. Its the fact a 10$ bill barely gets you a sub at all anymore

As a former Subways worker.

They're overcharging. Understaffing. Letting quality in produce drop. And not actively doing anything to fix any of these issues or make them a more appealing choice.

It's just cost for me. $5 footlongs are so ingrained in my memory that I can't pay $16 for a six-inch meal. The value is completely gone

Walked into a Subway just yesterday. They wanted nearly $20 for their new foot long. I went grocery shopping after that at a higher end organic store. $7 for a 16" freshly made sub with thick cut meats & cheeses & freshly baked bread & organic veggies.

Was gonna go to a subway nearby cause I had a coupon, but when I got to the completely empty store: "sorry, we don't take coupons"
I left immediately

Subway has also engaged in "shrinkflation". Their cheese slices are approximately half as thick as they used to be. Now their marketing their "$15" subs as having 2x cheese, when in reality, you're getting the same amount of cheese that used to come standard.

Used to eat at Subway all the time as a kid. $5 footlongs were a cheap, easy way to feed a family of 6, everyone got what they wanted, and it wasn't horrendously unhealthy. They got way too expensive, made the subs smaller, got stingy with toppings, and got rid of some of their best menu items.

For the price of a subway meal these days you could literally buy yourself a loaf of bread and everything you need to make the same sandwich.

I love how the line "improve it's overall impression of freshness" indicates no specific attempts to actually make anything fresher, just public perception. and I live for that half-assed energy

Subway: "Hey, do u wanna buy a sub??"
Me: "Did u bring back $5 footlongs?"
Subway: "...No"
Me: *keeps walking*

"but why are they failing???"

Because only an insane person would pay $14.99 for a sandwich. The end.

I remember why I'll never buy from subway again : Went there in 2021, after my local store reopened from COVID, they were closed for over a year. I got my usual order of a meatball sub. When checking out I noticed the price was several dollars higher than previously, and was told by employee, "Yeah, the price went up, you just gotta get used to it". When I got home and ate my sub, I had noticed that the ingredients were all worse and the sub didn't taste as good as before. Not worth the increased price for a worse sub.

I was hired, and no employee was ever trained by the manager. We had cockroaches. A light in the freezer was out. One employee nearly burnt the meatball section to a crisp. We had to buy cheese in the grocery store next door. I had to clock out at a certain time, just when I realized the person after me, did not even know how to make bread. I told him how, clocked out, and was fired like three hours later.

former worker here; They make you cut all meats in the store now which is cheaper for them because they don't increase the employee's pay. Its 1 or 2 people preparing every veggie and every meat in the morning in like 30min before the store opens. This leads to rushing so now the quality is HORRIBLE and slices are also much MUCH thinner. Steak is "glazed meat" not beef, tuna is surprisingly tuna (at least in Canada), and bread is never made right which is why its always soggy and pale. I was the only worker who cared at my store and everything was clean and bread was perfectly uniformly golden. Now that I'm gone it's just like every other subway. Not to mention the bread comes in boxes of 80 frozen sticks.

I used to work at subway in 2021, none of the food is fresh, it sits out in the pan for hours while the newer pans are covered unless someone specifically asks for it fresh, also the meatballs and sauce are frozen to stay fresh, the often don’t have a manager there, they don’t even have an in store office for one either so, workers tend to not be trained well and make the environment unsanitary and bad customer service. In most cases they only have one employee working. If i remember correctly the rules for if it was fresh or not was if it wasn’t literally molded or rotted it was “fresh”. I used to be like that “this looks gross, should i throw it out?” And they’d sometimes be like “nah it’s all good”. Often times the employees don’t even follow that rule.
