Joust was a top arcade hit released in 1982. It has since then been ported to several consoles, handhelds, and computers since then, offering many different versions of the arcade experience. In this video, I show 20 different versions of the game from Atari to Xbox explaining some of the differences. Thank you to Stu's Games Reviews for helping with the Apple and PC footage!

I’ve been watching this guy for a bit. Around 10 years, big fan. I met John a couple times. He’s so nice.

In January of 1997 I had both the 7800 and ST versions. Joust was one of my favorite arcade games and these two version blew me away.

The 2600 port is greatly improved by the Vector Joust hack that hollows out the sprites and just really cleans it up visually

John Hancock is like the cool uncle you never had, teaching you about old games you'd never heard of.

I have fond memories of playing Joust in a sub shop. The lava monster was really cool, and I remember being disappointed that it wasn't in the 2600 version. However, I played the 2600 version a lot.

It's really funny looking back. As a kid all I wanted was to be able to play the arcade perfect version at home. Now looking back I'm glad we have so many different ports of these classic arcade games, because you can have so many different experiences with the same game.

I loved this type of video, especially since you have so many examples. Do you have a playlist of more videos such as this? Would love to see more of these. Really helps to pick which versions to hunt down. :)

My first introduction to Joust was the arcade game, but I didn't understand how to play it until I got the Atari 2600 game. I later got the SNES collection that had Joust and got really good with that version. What a great game though. So many memories of playing that thing for hours on end.

You know who was a really big fan of this game? Satoru Iwata.
It's what inspired him to make Balloon Fight, and he even got to program the Famicom port!

Thankfully i play this game over nearly 40years... Atari 800XL, Atari ST, Atari Lynx and Xbox 360.. all of them are great enjoyable ports.. Joust is a wonderful timeless game, which still fascinates young people today. Great Video! 👍

Love the channel and wish I could subscribe twice. You are the most knowledgeable collector out there and probably nicest guy on YouTube.I see your collection and it’s amazing. I hope to one day have a atleast a loose cart nes, snes and genesis collection and you inspired me to get there. Thank you and keep up the awesome videos

The version I played the most was the Atari 400/800 version, essentially identical to the 5200. These days I've got the arcade version on Midway Arcade Origins for the XB360, which still plays great on the XBOne. Nothing quite matches the feel of the arcade cabinet--I think having a nice arcade-style button is crucial for making the flap action feel really good. But most of the ports of this game are actually fine. Even the 2600 version isn't bad--the egg mechanic is different, but it doesn't ruin the game.

Played it on the 2600 quite a but despite a large collection didn't own the cart back in the day. I do have the 7800, version which is quite good and where I play it most. I really think the Genesis and SNES ports are excellent. I didn't know about the enhanced graphical version on the 360!

My first home console version of Joust was on the Atari 5200, I'm 46 years old.

I remember when joust came out on arcade and the bar down the street from my house got the cabinet. All of the kids from the neighborhood would go in to play Joust and a few other arcades, I remember bouncing between Joust, Space Invaders, Asteroids (there was always a line at the PacMan so I never played it) and my favorite was Galaga. But Joust has never gotten boring. I was actually just playing the GBC version (with the Defender split) 2 weeks ago and I realized when I quit that I had been playing for 2 hours. Not every game can suck me in like that, but for a game that I've been playing for almost 40 years its pretty amazing that it can still do it.
