Dr. G's Body Language Course:

In this video, Dr. G, a clinical and forensic psychologist, dives deep into the body language and behavioral dynamics between JD Vance and Tim Walz during their highly anticipated vice presidential debate. Held last night in New York and broadcast on CBS News, the debate featured both candidates tackling critical issues such as climate change, immigration, and the economy. As Dr. G meticulously breaks down their nonverbal cues—facial expressions, gestures, and posture—he provides a detailed analysis of how their behaviors may reflect their confidence, political strategies, and ability to connect with the audience.

One of the standout moments of the debate occurred when Vance and Walz clashed over climate change. Vance, while acknowledging the extreme weather patterns the U.S. has faced, shifted the focus to increasing energy production, arguing that the Trump-Vance administration would restore American manufacturing to combat climate concerns. Walz, however, countered this by emphasizing the real-world impacts of climate change on his Midwestern state, drawing on personal experiences of droughts and floods affecting local farmers.

Another heated segment came when immigration was discussed. Vance largely deflected questions about Trump’s plans for mass deportations, instead pivoting to criticize the current administration’s border policies. Walz, meanwhile, highlighted the human toll of broken immigration systems, advocating for a bipartisan approach to reform. Dr. G’s expert breakdown of these nonverbal behaviors offers viewers deeper insights into how each candidate navigated these high-stakes moments, revealing the underlying strategies at play.

As the election draws nearer, both candidates aimed to solidify their standing with voters. The stark contrast between their body language styles will leave viewers to contemplate how these nonverbal dynamics could influence the outcome of this closely watched race.

I saw an interview today and JD reacted to the interviewer mentioning that people were commenting on Vance’s “smug” face. He laughed and said he’d heard that too, but it was just him looking at the clock. It was great to see you got that right in your assessment.

People need to school themselves on what a Vice President is and isn’t allowed to do!

Vance was on the Harvard debate team when he was in college. He was very well trained to control emotions and deploy debate tactics. Walz was a public school teacher for years and I think you can see that in him. He needed emotions to engage his students. Plus being from the Midwest, me too, and not to generalize, but we are raised to be compassionate, accommodating and welcoming to everyone. Ever visit WI or IA or MN? You’d be invited to a home cooked dinner with the family within 5 min of meeting someone if you said you were hungry 😂

At least we see 2 men who are respectful towards each other. Not a hate debate like we saw in the previous debate. 😮😮😮

Thank you Dr G. Two things first, 1. I’m a US Marine combat veteran 2. I’m a sociologist today . That being said, Vance, although he was a journalist in the Marines he still went through Marine Corps bootcamp and training. Whenever we go before a board for meritorious promotions we are trained to answer questions with confidence regardless if the answer is wrong and display tact and discipline in our responses. Case in point, when I was going up for meritorious promotion to corporal before a board the Sergeant Major asked me “How many Trucks were on base”. I confidently said 1789 civilian trucks” . The sgtmaj laughed and commended me on my bearing and calmly told me that there are two trucks on the base. A truck is the ball on top of a flagpole and in the truck is a book of matches, instructions on how to burn the flag if ever overran and a bullet to kill yourself because marines don’t burn the flag willingly. He also had public information officer training as a correspondent. So I saw those things he was trained to do.

So it was Vance checking the time. He gave another look, too. I thought he was looking at the camera and that he was trying to send some subtle messages to the viewers.

Yeah, these two have completely different public speaking styles. In real life, I’m the Walt-type in terms of wearing my emotions on my sleeves and show people my reactions. I want to practice to be a poker-face like Vance. Yet, at times when I don’t give reaction when someone’s talking to me, they assume I didn’t understand them and then repeat themselves. Super funny. Verbal and non-verbal communication can be very interesting.

I can’t believe there was no Analysis of Vance‘a side stare into the camera! What a miss for an Explains! It was the most viral and widely discussed instance if body language, probably most illustrative moment of his craft. I’m just surprised. You can say I’m smiling and my eyebrows are up. What an opportunity to let go by the wayside…

Once again you give us a striking insight into human behavior. I experienced those sad eyebrows that Walz gave us between laps as if he felt CONCERNED about .. could that be true too?

My main concern is how to survive all of these financial and political crisis, especially in light of the US political power scuffle. The government has really called things more difficult for its citizens, and we can't sit back and bear all the consequences of the bad governance...

Vance has been conditioned to enjoy confrontation. Walz has been socialized to uncover common ground. What you consider sadness is explicable in that context. ‘Minnesota nice’ is a group of inculcated values.
