"Far left" is a relative term. US politics has shifted to the right, Obama or Hillary should be considered as moderate Republicans. Eisenhower was pro-union and he was a Republican. If Bernie Sanders is far left (he calls himself a "social democrat") then every other developed country in the world is far left as well because they all have universal public health insurance (except maybe Switzerland that has a strongly regulated private system) and a strong social net. The US on its current trajectory is going towards increasing concentration of wealth, destruction of the middle class, increased alienation of a significant portion of the population that will eventually destroy democracy. Trump is a symptom, not the illness. And his incompetence has saved the US for now. But a Trump 2.0 will emerge, with white supremacist ideas, the desire to concentrate power and destroy civil rights, the brains to accomplish it, and we might end up with a version of Hitler but with webcams in every home, cameras in every street, facial recognition and AI software to predict people's behavior and nukes.
