Came from a gen 1 mt10sp. Which was decatted and mapped. Bought the s1000r in July. The thing that got me initially was the lack of low down power on the BMW. But since mapping it and removing the torque restrictions its a new beast ! Absolutely love it.
Mpg way better than the 10, tire wear getting double the milage of the 10 and suspension much better on my bumpy roads.

Is it the accessories that make a bike special or the engine? Personally, as a 10 owner, it has to be the crossplane engine. It's interesting that you being a generation younger than myself, what you find important on a motorcycle.
Beemer is a lovely machine, no doubt about it.
Back in 2016, when bike world did a comparison test with the S1000R, MT10, Speed Triple and Super Duke, the MT10 stopped quickest. Problem is feel. Folks like two finger braking and the 10 especially on stock pads, needs more lever pull. (I accept things have probably moved on since then)

Got a 2021 red s1000r. Tested the MT10 too. SP version. Sad to say... but the MT10 it's better.

Love my Gen1 Sport has plenty spec and Woolich Tuned and full titanium Arrow Competition Evo exhaust as well. Amazing bikes and the exhaust change is mega. 169.3whp on mine. The new M1000R looks unreal.

Man you do great reviews but you need to look at gear ratios. The BMW S1000R has a slightly lower final drive ratio (2.647) compared to the Yamaha MT-10 (2.813). This means the MT-10 will have slightly lower gearing, offering more acceleration at the expense of top speed compared to the S1000R.

TLDR: You can put a bigger rear sprocket on the BMW and have the same acceleration. The BMW actually has MORE TORQUE than the Yamaha. It's not the engine in the MT10 that your butt-dyno felt, it was the final drive.

Peak torque S1000R: 84 lb-ft at 9, 250 rpm
Peak torque MT-10: 82 lb-ft at 9, 000 rpm

Addition/correction: the final drive must be combined with whichever gear is selected to find the exact wheel torque. Here are some more specific comparisons between the two bikes. Higher numbers = faster acceleration, lower top speed in each gear:

BMW S1000R Combined Gear Ratios:
1st Gear: 2.647 * 2.647 = 7.010
2nd Gear: 2.091 * 2.647 = 5.533
3rd Gear: 1.727 * 2.647 = 4.573
4th Gear: 1.500 * 2.647 = 3.970
5th Gear: 1.360 * 2.647 = 3.597
6th Gear: 1.261 * 2.647 = 3.336

Yamaha MT-10 Combined Gear Ratios:
1st Gear: 2.666 * 2.813 = 7.501
2nd Gear: 2.000 * 2.813 = 5.626
3rd Gear: 1.619 * 2.813 = 4.553
4th Gear: 1.381 * 2.813 = 3.885
5th Gear: 1.190 * 2.813 = 3.349
6th Gear: 1.037 * 2.813 = 2.918

Comparison:
1st Gear: S1000R (7.010) vs. MT-10 (7.501) - MT-10 is lower geared.
2nd Gear: S1000R (5.533) vs. MT-10 (5.626) - MT-10 is slightly lower geared.
3rd Gear: S1000R (4.573) vs. MT-10 (4.553) - Very similar gearing.
4th Gear: S1000R (3.970) vs. MT-10 (3.885) - S1000R is slightly higher geared.
5th Gear: S1000R (3.597) vs. MT-10 (3.349) - S1000R is higher geared.
6th Gear: S1000R (3.336) vs. MT-10 (2.918) - S1000R is higher geared.

The S1000R is the better all round package but the MT10 is still 95% there for most people.

All bikes are so good that we're just splitting hairs!

I have an MT09, mapped, exhaust etc and lower gearing (-1front, +1rear), mine felt torquier and quicker (and more fun) than a 71 plate S1000R except when the S1R was past 6000revs.... having another test ride in a couple of days. I can't get over how slow the BMW felt (under 6k)

I'm considering either a new MT10-SP or an S1000R with some options, so thanks for the video, it's quite useful.

Excellent review.
Did you get a S1000R in the end?
I have a MT09 SP and want to change to a MT10 or S1000R.

Hi, great review of the S1000R. I'm looking forward to get my hands on this bike. However, i just wanna know. On BMW website, i saw the 3 colors that you mentioned; black, grey and white. However, how do i differentiate between the 2022 and 2023 model? From the side fairings perhaps or anything thats different? I just want to make sure that the dealer gets me the 2023 instead of 2022 model.

Have the 21 S1000r, says 1000r sport however it doesn't have Dynamic Pro... How can I tell if my one is the sport version? Dealers write anything to make sales...
