Resounding Voices Poetry Slam and Open Mic Session, 14 December 2024 12H00 - 18H00 at Polokwane Art Museum : Sello Chokoe is a top-ten participant in the 2024 Poetry Afrika's Slam Jam Competition. He is a creative writer, actor, and spoken word artist. An ever-growing expressionist from Moletjie, Lissa Ga-Kgare, Sello developed a deep passion for writing and performance after taking a lead role in a high school play STOP XENOPHOBIA, directed by Hodi Tsamago, which toured Limpopo in 2008.
Upon arriving at the University of Limpopo in 2011, where he majored in BSc Computer Science, he became involved in several student theatre and film productions. Sello is now a marketing and communications graduate and the founder of Maropeng Creatives (Pty Ltd), an artistic production company dedicated to developing and celebrating the essence of art in Limpopo.
Chokoe has since worked with great playwrights and directors such as Selaelo Maredi, Kgafela oa Mokgokgodi, and Roelf Matlala, collaborating on various theatre and poetry productions to date, including a successful one-man tour across all Limpopo districts. Sello was part of the WHAT IS POETRY Tour at the University of Limpopo and has featured twice at the Polokwane Literary Festival, both as an actor and a poet, sharing the stage with artists such as Lebo Mashile, David Wa Maahlamela, and Vonani Bila. He is also the first provincial champion of Current State of Poetry's SA National Poetry Slam in Limpopo.
Sello Chokoe's works of poetry are featured on various online platforms, including Mega Artists Magazine and Keyaka Magazine. He has shared his voice on Thobela FM, Capricorn FM, and Energy FM. He is part of Volume 2 of the international anthology Via Grapevine and released his solo work in the form of a poetry album, H.O.M.E: Heart Of My Expressions, in 2016.
