Thanks so much Joseph for putting in the hard work and trying to compensate for GoPro's recent audio inadequacies. I'm not surprised by the results, but as I said in your last video, you did an amazing job cleaning up the Hero 5's audio. I'm very excited to dig into your technical deep dive to see what you've been up to.

The two big questions I have for you are: Did you return the Karma Grip? And next time you hit the trails what camera setup are you taking with you?

Have you tried a small lav mic with GoPro? I used to use one on my hero 4 before I put dead cat directly on camera. It worked pretty well. Just clipped it on my chest mount and either ran it to my phone recorder and synced up later or directly into GoPro depending on application.

The audio on the Hero 5 has been a struggle. I'm not committed enough to buy a Hero 4 for.my channel. One thing I have done is place dead cats on the outside of the karma grip cage. Then in post modify the audio profile to boost tremble. Always a work in progress.

I think the key take away is that the Hero 4 is still the top dog in our market. For the love of god can't it go on sale yet? I really hope GoPro catches on. I was talking to one of their sales guys and he seemed surprised when I told him people don't use the new one because the audio blows! We should start a twitter campaign that gets all the MTB YouTube fans to tag GoPro daily talking about the sound sucking!

really surprised the external mic was C as I thought that was the worst sounding. I don't adjust my sound at all from my external set up (sony as-30V + rode smart lav+) as its pretty dam good out the box. I have the mic on my shoulder strap which is different from where you had your external (probably too big though). A friend uses the senheisser elements 2 but you can't attach the camera to the gimbal in the case.

Hi. Interesting results....thanks for putting together this comparison. At the end of your video you mention ideas on making the Hero5 workable, and for myself I end up using two audio filters in Premiere Pro. The first is DeHummer which takes out some of the gimbal buzz. The second is an FFT filter that has a notch filter centered around 500-600Hz depending on the clip. Seems like the gimbal I'm using centers it's distinctive buzz around this frequency. Happy riding!

Keep in mind that the Rode Mic is not linear (according to the frequencyresponse sheet on the website), plus I dont know how linear the Micinput (Zoom H1)is.

Question: Was the Rode facing down or straight forward.

I like how the 4 has a soul patch, and the 5 has the equivalent of a patchy neck beard.
I really wanted the 5 to crush it once you removed the membranes. I guess the market for 4 isn't going anywhere soon...

Playing around with the GP6, recording in 4K with protunes audio processing on medium with wind on was night/day difference compared to recording in 2K.
