June 23rd is National Typewriter Day! This day commemorates when the typewriter was first patented on this day in 1868. The typewriter was patented by American inventor Christopher Latham Sholes.

For today, we are sharing a video from the desk of our Museum Director who typed a message using her 1950s apple red Smith-Corona typewriter.

Boy that one types a lot more smoothly than my grandmother's 1930's typewriter did. I used to have to type school assignments on it in the '90s, since we were too poor to afford an electric typewriter, much less any kind of word processor, and we lived in the country, had one car, and my dad's work schedule was erratic, so I couldn't count on being able to get to the library or borrow a friend's computer to do them. White-out was my best friend.

Brings back lots of memories. The "ding" sound is all that!! I used the heavy black models. They had a heavier sounds, more metallic I think.

This deserves more likes. People don't understand how far we've come. I hope I see it again next year in June.

A working non electric typewriter was on my Christmas list every year since I was nine. I was a weird child. 😅

I absolutely adore the red (my favourite colour). An elegant piece of machinery. I bought a 1914 to 1924 (unknown exact year) Royal 10 typewriter with the two bevel windows. Its got some wear n tear, but it works like a charm in addition to being over a century old.

That is the most well preserved typewriter I've ever seen.

The smith corona and all its adaptations afterwards made it my favorite.
