I remember before he became an icon of great disco. Every Sunday afternoon, we would go to The Elephant Walk, a fabled bar on the corner of 18th & Castro in San Francisco and Sylvester would sing for free. We would all dance and shove dollar bills in his clothing and go wild. Great days, may he rest in peace for all the great joy he brought to the world through his music with his husband Patrick Crowley

I heard the original 7" on the radio in 1983 and scrambled for a tape to capture it! I was electrified. Instantly made a C60 loop tape and listened to it for about a week. Because dance DJs never introduced tracks on air, it took me a long while to find out anything about it. A few weeks later I managed to tape a lot of Cowley's album and it set the standard for High Energy as far as I was concerned for many years.

I didn't know about Sylvester for years. I only knew it as the work of Patrick Cowley and no one I knew had ever heard of him. At the time most people I knew were into INXS, Dire Straits or ACDC It's difficult to appreciate how underground High Energy was in the early 80s.
