I have the original Power Grid (with a few expansion maps) and have played the deluxe version care of a friend. I REALLY liked the deluxe version and find it an improvement component wise over the original. I like that the fuel pieces are shaped differently, I like how the power plant pieces have those 3 chimney projections, and I like the large and lighter colored board which makes the game easier on the eyes. The money does a bit cheap but my group really liked it better than the paper money in the original. The gameplay itself is basically the same good old auction and network building goodness.

Considering the huge drop in price for the original right now, I think even new players should get that instead. It's not a game that will hit the table too often due to time constraints and due to the fact that it works better in that 4-5 player range while other heavy euros work better in the 2-3. If you have a big group, MAYBE consider the deluxe version, but I think it's better to just pay half the price for the original, which is essentially perfect in every way except with having the resource chart on the back of the book.

I love Power Grid, and while I think the new art style is cool, the original feels more like I'm building an actual grid- it's dirty, it's mechanical, and it's very unique.

Finally, many of the rule changes in PG Deluxe could likely be applied to the original version anyway.

So, Electro is the currency in the game? Sorry, couldn't resist. I think Power grid is going to be moved up on my games wanted list. Good review. Thanks for doing it Tom.
