Wooden log is a reference to how it's the only way to kill one of the regenerating vampire types.
Cutting/dismembering it will only make it regenerate, so use the logs to crush it.

This makes me want the weird corpse spider robot things from Junji Ito's Gyo in Monster Hunter. The smaller fish ones can be regular mobs, and one of the sharks can be a large hunt monster.
