She was a beast 15 November 1942! Gutted Kirishima with 20 16" shells; 7 of which hit below the waterline.
William Augustus Lee was a Gunnery and radar expert without equal.

Thanx for the great information.. my dad fought on the bb-56 through the entire Pacific campaign. He was down in the boiler room area.. he said sometimes they weren't allowed top side for days on end...

THANK YOU! For: great pictures; identifying each pic; getting a lot of detail into a short video; and especially, for getting the battle with the IJN Kirishima correct. USS Washington - and Admiral Lee - were Badass.

My father was a "newly minted butter bar" (Ensign) and a "Plank Owner", when the Admiral fell overboard....
The Aft Lookout reported it, and the ship astern dropped the marker buoy. But no one else saw anyone (IRC, my father said it was evening/night time) in the water.

Muster was held, and everyone was present. It was held again, and everyone was "present and accounted for"!
-SO-
The JOOD (Junior Officer Of the Deck) went to the Admiral's At Sea Cabin to report a false alarm, and "all hell broke loose!!!"

Contrary to standing orders for Convoys, the Washington turned around, and went looking. Finally spotted the Man Overboard Buoy, but didn't find the Admiral.

P.S. my father really respected Admiral Lee!!

Three-gun turrets not triple turrets. Three-gun turrets are individually sleeved. Triple turrets were not! This means three-gun turrets could elevate the turret guns individually!

Learn your history better- Kiroshima was upgraded and reclassiied as a battleship in the 1930s. It was a BB vs 2 BBs.
