Drakes was more of a North East brand in the 60’s through 80’s. At their height in the 70’s, they were the main competitors of Hostess. Not only were there Ring Dings versus Ding Dogs, but Yodels vs. Ho Ho’s and so on. As someone who moved around the country a lot, I found these regional bakeries would differ by location. For instance, when we moved to the Midwest, there was no Drakes, but it was the first time I encountered Dolly Madison. Little Debbie’s was primarily a Southern thing until they expanded more in the 80’s.

Drake’s was popular in Long Island NY and NJ. As a kid I preferred Drakes over Hostess- neither taste the same/ waxy chocolate, more sugar in the cream

I used to buy Hostess Ding Dongs back in the 70s, but based upon the video they look a lot smaller today.

I used to eat this back in the 60's as a kid when the Hostess King Ding Dong came in a light weight foil wrapper. None of this plastic crap.

As a child, you always have a strong sense of taste. As you get older, everything you recall in your youth is better including taste of food!

I remember the larger size in the 60's when they had many cream holes in the bottom and were 10¢ each. These that are being made by the Little Debbie Co. are better than Ding Dongs, but not like the original Drake's brand.

Ring dings are better. And as you age your taste changes. The cakes are likely the same but your taste buds are older. Yodels are good too!
