As I got into my final years of uni I started structuring my thesis statements as "if...then...because" statements (before trimming them down in edits to be less wordy/more concise). It's not a perfect science but it was always easy for working out the core of my idea before trimming it down, I always found thesis statements the hardest part of any paper

Well done Ariel, yes that's correct. I also tell my students that a thesis statement is the anchor for all their topic sentences and that often their topic sentences must evolve from their thesis statement and must all tie back to it. I really like the compass analogy too ;)

This example on how to write a thesis statement was absolutely wonderful thank you so much. For years I never understood how to do it exactly but you made it very simple and plain.

I came here to say thank you. After this weird year that 2020 has become, I am going back to school at 25 after not being in an English class for 8 years. I do not remember how to cite or format in MLA, how to make a thesis statement, or properly structure an essay. This coupled with all of my classes being an online format (no lectures, just assignments, discussion posts, ect) have made it extremely difficult to learn and get back on track.
