RDA for iodine is 150mcg, this is confusing not only to the public but
also to many experts. The human body excretes 480mcg of iodine
through the urine and another 40mcg through stools daily. Another factor
to consider is that certain cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, bushel sprouts,
etc) and Rosacea family of fruits (almonds, apricots, cherries, etc) which
also contain goitrogens effect utilization of iodine by the body. Many
chemicals from the environment and medications are also classified as
goitrogenic such as heavy metals, NSAID’s, Bromides, Antibiotics just to
name a few. Chlorine also effects the absorption of iodine by the body,
whether by drinking, bathing and swimming. Then one must consider the
depletion of nutrients in the soils that effect iodine levels in foods.
Recent research indicates there is concern over iodine deficiency and
the effects it has on the human body. Here are some facts; The Japanese
consume 7mg to 10mg even over 14mg of iodine daily which is regarded
as the highest by any country. Consider this the population of Japan is
127 million; about 17K covid-19 cases confirmed, 15K recovered and 900
fatalities. The US has a population of 329 million; 2 million confirmed
covid-19 cases, 530 recovered and 113K fatalities. Narrow this down to
states, Montana has a population of 1.1 million; 525 confirmed covid-19
cases, 464 cases recovered and 17 deaths.
For a healthy immune system, sufficient iodine levels must be maintained. The iodine load test involves consuming 50mg of Lugols iodine or
iodide solution and testing iodine concentration after 24 hrs.
