The Single Term Presidents

preview_player
Показать описание
A brief rundown of all of the single term presidents in United States history. Presidents have only served one term for a variety of reasons. John Quincy Adams, Benjamin Harrison and Jimmy Carter failed in their re-election bids; James K. Polk, James Buchanan and Rutherford B. Hayes did so out of choice; and Zachary Taylor, James A. Garfield and John F. Kennedy died in office without ever having the chance.

This video touches on some of the reasons certain presidents weren't re-elected or why they vowed not to run for second terms; however, it is not a comprehensive or complex look.

For your entertainment.

Presidential election rematches would be an interesting video. The last time a rematch ended with the previous loser winning was when Grover Cleveland beat Benjamin Harrison for his second, non-consecutive term in office. William Jennings Bryan tried to defeat William McKinley and failed twice. The same thing happened with Aldai Stevenson and Dwight Eisenhower.

Hey great video. I would suggest maybe listening back to your audio, at some points the emphasis you’re putting on something sounds aggressive or angry and kind of unsettled me. Just an idea, don’t mean to offend just want you to reach a larger audience !

The American people and the entire world should always be inspired by the leadership and countless sacrifices of *President* *William* *Henry* *Harrison.* He was the last president born during British Colonialism, and unfortunately most presidential historians consistently rank him in the bottom two of the _List_ _of_ _Worst_ _American_ _Presidents._

After being sworn in as the Ninth President, he led the nation from the steps of the US Capitol, down Pennsylvania Ave, and to the entrance of the White House. Not much is known of what happen after that, but he went on to later inspire Anthony Scaramucci's July 2017 tenure as White House Communications Director. The only controversy during the *William* *Harrison* *Administration* was the disturbing fact that he reported to work on the first day as "unresponsive and dead." Back then, it was considered rude to get paid and die, without accomplishing any government business.

One thing not mentioned, is the "two-thirds" rule that Democrats used in choosing a nominee, between 1832 and 1932. The two-thirds rule forced Democrats to choose Nominees, who lean towards a more moderate or even conservative candidate.

A President, such as Polk, might take a pledge, so reelection would not be a factor, in getting the job done.

Pierce won in 1852, but was defeated for renomination, because he couldn't get the "two-thirds" vote in 1856. (Pierce won a simple majority on the first ballot, but didn't have the supermajority.)

Another President, such as Buchanan, might win the nomination, but might have to make a concession that no matter what happens, he shall not seek the nomination and will not accept it on the following cycle. Buchanan was a nominee in 1844, 1848 and 1852. He won the 1856, but wasn't a nominee in 1860.

Cute how he adds President Biden as a one term President before he has even finished his first term.

Do you think Calvin Coolidge and Lyndon Johnson could be considered single term presidents due to the shortness of their first terms and the fact that they decided not to seek reelection?

John Adams’ term technically crossed into the 19th century, so there were 15 in the 19th century 🤓

Between Clinton, Bush 43, and Obama, that was 24 consecutive years of two term presidents. I think the country is fatigued with eight year presidents. It’s a long time if you think about it. With Trump being a one-termer, I wonder if Biden will be, and the president after that, too.
