It's so interesting that the discovery of Newfoundland was in 1497, creating the British Empire and ended in 1997 when the handover of Hong Kong happened, so thats exactly 500 years, half a millennium.

Giving up Hong Kong in 1997 was only the unofficial end of the empire, the remaining territories were renamed the British Overseas in 2002, but the institution of the empire remains, for example in the “Order of the British Empire”
