To those saying why they need to prove his status of living, it’s most likely to prevent fraud, to prevent someone from using a (supposedly) dead person’s identity.

My mother had a situation similar when she got married the mix-up at the courthouse declared her dead when they gave her a new last name I think she spent close to a decade dead

Imagine trying to prove in a court room you're alive and they don't believe you because the death certificate says you're dead and they believe certificates more even though you're still breathing right in front of them and require a court ordered physician to take your vitals

Funnily enough, something like this happened to my grandfather. But instead of ex-wife, it was some guy he never met before: the relative of the person that died that had connections with the government thing that keeps track if that stuff (social security?), so when they needed to verify the social security number of the person that actually died, they just took his word for it when he said it was (he probably didn’t even bother checking), and didn’t check further. My grandfather lost his VA benefits and all that, and it took a long time to convince the government he was alive. When they finally started sending the money again, they’d only do it for one week them forget the next time. I think he had to call his state’s senator to get the issue rectified or something.

I’m being vague on the details because 1.) I don’t remember everything and 2.) I don’t want to be too specific since it was kinda a personal family incident.

My mom did this to my first step dad. She told him to change his mailing address and he didn't. She just started writing "Deceased" on his mail and sent it back. It took almost a year for him to straighten it out with the state.
